SimpliSafe Now Sells A Wi-Fi Extender?

When did SimpliSafe start selling Wi-Fi extenders?

https://simplisafe.com/wifi-extender

Looks like this is a TP-Link product (with an older logo?) and not a SimpliSafe branded product. Is there anything special about this or specific to SimpliSafe versus other Wi-Fi extenders?

@Worthing nothing exotic about it. They are selling the vanilla flavor of the extender.  Ends up many people needed one, so SS just thought they would help out and be able to sell them one. As stated in the past, I highly recommend Google WIFI (not Nest as who needs that many built in google assistant devices). My 4 point system does a great job, no dead spots and everything works.

Hi Worthing,

Yep, there's nothing different about the Wireless Extender versus what you'd find at other retailers. We had actually been using these units in Customer Service, as a possible troubleshooting step for users with extreme range difficulties. Obviously we wouldn't put it on our website if it wasn't compatible, but we can say it's been extensively tested with SimpliSafe systems.

I'm a proponent of Mesh router systems.  Especially so when integrating cameras into your system.  Cameras (esp. outdoor cameras) seem to need the strongest signal possible, and frequently moving a mesh node closer to the camera is the only practical solution.

Extenders work well.  But I think Mesh works better though they can be more expensive.  I use the Amazon Echo system, and I like it very much.

@glenbarrington I definitely agree with you.  My router and 3 remote Google WIFI mesh system is great. When I put in the two outdoor cams it worked okay but adding another point between the two cams made the occasional drops stop, much more consistent and reliable.

I just contacted Simply Safe customer support. In answer to my question of whether this extender works with all Wi-Fi connected devices, the  answer was "no, it only works with the SS cameras". Is that true? If it is a generic extender, wouldn't it work with any Wi-Fi devices?

Hi @melsharb,

The WiFi extender will work with any WiFi devices you have in your home, including your SimpliSafe cameras. A WiFi extender will not help with the range of your sensors (like the Entry Sensor or Motion Sensor) as they communicate to the Base Station via radio frequency.

we've had SIMPLISAFE in our house for a number of years and we have an indoor simpli cam located outside the house at the front porch under a completely covered roof – on rare occasions, it drops connection and restarting it with SIMPLISAFE tech service on the phone helps gets it to work for a day and it drops and then he goes and starts and fits until it works continually again.  I now see as of February 25 or so 2024 that you have a Wi-Fi extender- will this address my "weak connection" with the camera that is located outside on a wall that has aluminum foil faced cell sheeting under the vinyl siding?

@imtruegoblue an extender can certainly help a bit, especially if you place it near a window so that the signal can bypass the walls. But yes, metal sheeting will do quite a lot to block any wireless signals.
