Keypad lighting up

My keypad lights up every night about 2:00am for no apparent reason. No one is near it and the sensors are not activated. Why does it do this? I've only had the system about a month.

Any one have an idea?

Hi all,

It's correct that the keypad for the All New SimpliSafe system does have a touch-to-wake feature that makes the keypad light up. While the keypad can sense someone approaching from a short distance, it will usually only do so up to a very short distance of a few inches.

For those who would like to disable the touch-to-wake feature you can easily do so by activating the Power Savings from any of your keypads or your online account. To activate Power Savings from the keypad press Menu -> Enter your Master PIN -> Devices -> Select your keypad -> Set Power Savings to On. Power Savings mode has the following effects:

  • Disables the touch-to-wake feature
  • Dims screen in 5 seconds instead of 12
  • Turns off screen after 10 seconds instead of 20

I did this last week. It had gone through a set of batteries is just a few weeks. It solved the problem for about 2 hours. It now has new batteries again. Light is on bright and stays that way no matter what I do. What is the resolution for this? Not a "what I did was" but a resolution from SimpiSafe? Sunday, I came in, the alarm sounded, the keypad was dead. With all the complaints here, there should be a resolution.

It's a known issue, although I don't know why yours lights up at the same time every night.  It's been said by a rep on the forum that it is (sort of) a motion sensor (but has no alarm capabilities other than the red panic button on top) - so presumably, the light can be triggered by a nearby tv, a human close-by, a ceiling fan, possibly a change in temperature in the room (unlikely, but who knows).  There is a setting via your keypad settings that you can put the keypad on power-saving mode - it should cease lighting up at unexpected times if you want to consider that option.

I have 4 keypads and none of them light up unless your hand is within a few inches or you touch the keypad. I've tried them all in battery save mode and no battery save mode and they never recognize that fact that anyone has approached them. Is there a trick to getting them to see motion that I'm not aware of?

I have a keypad about 15 feet from my bed and it will light up while I am in bed.  My Family room pad does the same thing when no one is close to it.  They only stay on for a few seconds but they should not be coming on in the first place.  It appears there is an epidemic with this problem that SS should address.

@mullinsjohn937​ Have you already tried turning on Power Saving mode as mentioned above? This can be done in the Keypad by navigating to Menu > Devices > select [your Keypad] > toggle Power Savings on. 

If this does not stop your Keypads from lighting up at random, then we may need to replace them - our Support team can help with that.

I started having this light up problem about one week ago.  My guess is SS updated the firmware and has bugs.   I set on power saving mode and it still lights up at different times and quite often.  Could it be the doorbell motion detector?

@doctorno​ I don’t have a SimpliSafe doorbell. My system was purchased new in March 2023. I have two keypads. They both light up at will. I just turned on the power savings mode. Remains to be seen if this actually stops the issue.

@arctic513 did you try putting your keypad in power saving mode? May address the issue while SS works on a fix.

Same issue - quite disconcerting in the middle of the night to suddenly have your alarm system lighting up the room - I thought alarm systems were supposed to calm, not alarm you.  I'll try the power saver option, but this is definitely an undocumented feature that needs to be fixed.

@ billeverard  Not a undocumented feature, its a bad proximity switch. if  your keypad is doing this, especially with the power saver option on, call and get the keypad replaced under warranty at nc.  My daughter had her replacement and is now working fine without lighting up in the middle of the night.

My bedroom keypad has started randomly lighting up again. It did that for a while, but then stopped for quite a while before starting back worse than ever. Quite annoying when that light wakes you multiple times per night.  Everyone says turn on the power saving option, but that has no effect. Has Simplisafe ever addressed this issue?    Also have had 2 different entry sensors stop responding. The only way to correct this and the error message is to delete them from the system and then add them back. Removing the sensor battery and replacing it does not help. Also, have problems with several different sensors reporting open when they are not. Have to open and then close them to correct. It means that we could be unprotected at tomes, especially when we are away for extended periods. We had been happy with Simplisafe but now, not sure I can recommend it.

I have 4 keypads on my ss3 system and several randomly light up. I have found when the ceiling fan is on or the hvac is running it is much worse. I am assuming its a thermal type sensor in the keypad that causes the wake up. I am not 100% certain because it is not documented.

Another issue, like one of the other posters, i had a keypad go dead due to battery exhaustion and it ended up causing me to trigger an alarm before I could turn it off. My other sensors warn of low battery but the keypads don't seem to do that. I use rechargeables and they work fine but having no battery warning for a keypad is not acceptable. I get text messages from the system and this should be one of them.

I have 2 key fobs I originally used upon arrival or departure to arm/disarm but the key fob design is poor and I triggered a panic several times with the key fob in my pocket. Now they are in the dresser drawer.

Overall I love the system and have installed 4 to date. 1 ss2 and 3 ss3. But there are a few big snags that need to be addressed.

@ssmegner​ I bought my system in March 2023 and got 2 keypads. Both of them light up at will. Today, I mounted both keypads side by side, 2 inches apart, on two separate iPad stands. Both of them lit up at will, multiple times, not in sync. I recorded video for about 8 minutes to prove it.  There are no ceiling fans in my dining room. I have now ruled out ceiling fans or air conditioning as the culprits.

Hi @CarlosQuant​, 

Since ceiling fans/air conditioning units aren't the culprit here, I would try putting your Keypads into Power Saving mode. With this turned on, they should only light up if you place your hand near them or press a key.

Hi all,

It sounds as though there may be a few items at play here. For those of you who have a Keypad that is lighting up due to sources of heat (as in ssmegner's case), we recommend turning on the Power Saving mode on the affected Keypads. For instances where the Keypad appears to be randomly lighting up for no reason, Power Saving mode is an option here but you may also want to contact our Support Team to do some further troubleshooting.

Regarding the Keypad dying with no notice, the Keypad does check-in with the Base Station every few hours (as do all other sensors) to update its connection status as well as its battery status. Most likely, since the batteries are not lasting nearly as long as they should, the Keypad is dying before it is able to get the Low Battery signal to the Base Station. For reasons such as this, we do recommend using brand-name Alkaline batteries as they generally have more capacity than rechargeable batteries.

I used Everready and they lasted 2 weeks. The previous batteries were Duracell that last about a year and a half. I now have Duracell again but the light is staying on all the time so I am unsure of the time they will last.

The point of all this is.......What has been done by SimpiSafe to correct software problem , which it probably is OR it is a keypad that doesn't last very long. We need help and no one from SimpiSafe if addressing it straight on. Send these issues to management or higher. There are too many other companies out there for anyone to continue on with a company that won't address issues of this many people. I like mine BUT I am not silly enough to continue using a product that has issues that have been haven't been resolved. I too, last Sunday had to go running to find my key-fob to turn off the alarm caused by no battery power on the keypad. Not to mention the phone blasting along with if from the monitoring company.

FIX IT!

I got a new system back inarch I replaced the batteries 3 times keypads stays lit up I called they did replace it I've had it one day now it's doing the same thing it is on the save energy mode not sure what's going on?

If the backlight on your Keypad is staying on all the time, it's probably best to contact our Support Team to do some further troubleshooting. They can be reached by email at Customer-Support@SimpliSafe.com or by phone at 1-800-548-9508 from 8 AM to Midnight ET, 7 days a week. If necessary, they'll be able to replace the faulty Keypad at no charge if it's still under its three-year warranty.

Seems as though Simply Safe has just been kicking the ball around on this issue without solving the problem.  Disabling the sensor to stop it from lighting up at random times during the night is not a solution.  This also disables the light-up-when-touched feature. There is no one or anything near my keypad during the night that could possibly awaken the sensor - no fan, no electrical apparatus of any kind, no person and no temperature changes.  These sensors are just plain faulty and it's annoying as hell to have this light pop on several times during the night and light up half the house.

This problem still exists. My news system lights up and the battery dies with no noticed.  I got a replacement keypad and it does it too

I had the same issue brand new system less then a month old batteries keep dying already! I had the old system for years never had a problem! I figured out that turning power saving OFF actually works so far will update if changes. Definitely can't keep replacing batteries twice a month!!
