New Product Suggestion - Mailbox Sensor

Product suggestion: Mailbox notification sensor. Same as current door/window entry sensors, EXCEPT: 1) Does not trigger alarm, only sends notification that mailbox has been opened. Notice can be enabled/disabled separate from camera notices and 2) Sensor would reset and be ready to send the next notice a) after mail box is closed b) if signal to base is lost. The latter, because metal mailboxes shield the signal, thus the 'closed' signal may not get to the base. However, when mailbox is opened, signal can more easily escape the shielded box and more likely be received. Finally, the ‘tilt’ sensor mail box monitors on the market won’t work for community mailboxes, because the doors are hinged on the side, not the bottom.

@blwinton It has been requested often in the past and a customer actually created an entry sensor with a longer antennae for greater range. I purchased one (very inexpensive) but the performance was very poor.  Not so with garage door sensors, which are essentially standard entry sensors on nylon holders sold through Etsy, or in my case, good old door hinges. Sad thing is they work perfectly for Home mode but would really need a firmware update from SS to work properly for away.

Hey SS, hint hint!! (Again)

I had pretty good luck up to 60 feet from the house if I mounted the entry sensor on the door of the mailbox, and the magnet inside. Upside is that it allows for a stronger signal to the base, but the base still cannot receive the 'closed' signal. Downside is rain exposure when the door is opened. I see your point about some extra programming needed, as I really only need a notification, never an alarm, no matter the state of the alarm setting. That, and the need for it to default to 'closed', whether signal is lost or an actual 'closed' signal is received by the base. It only needs to notify once for each separate time an open signal is received.

@captain11  I use geofence and Home Assistant to disarm SS and Alarmo. Of course I have Zigbee sensors on the garage doors anyhow.

Did you expose the wire on the sensor, it is the antenna?

@dlpsr I misinterpreted your post but now got it. Wire was insulated and I drilled a hole in the bottom back of the mail box to run the wire on the outside of the mailbox.  Location is approx 35 - 45 feet from the base, trees in the way etc and was not a reliable connection. Did a trial for about 2 weeks and our USPS postman faithfully called me each day when we pulled down the door. :-) While his calls were like clockwork, can't say the same for the modified entry sensor.  Not reliable for this purpose, at least with my experience.

@captain11 I'll try Zwave, just for fun. My mailman is like the one in Funny Farm.

@captain11 If you still want to mess with it, and if your box is metal, try wood underneath or plastic, like they recommend for some metal doors. I'd imagine mail boxes are made of cheap & possibly magnetic steel.

Or last resort that may mess with frequency, strip a 1/4 in off the wire and add some just twisted on to test.

With Zwave I can put an Aeotec router outside in a receptacle if needed. All sensors are finiky with steel and bricks etc.

The wire was not stripped and extended to facilitate the necessary frequency to communicate to the base. You may want o give that a try. Will try and find the link and update this post.
