Basic App Control relies on the SimpliSafe Gen 3's WiFi connection to link your system with the app.
Unfortunately, the SimpliSafe Original only has the built-in cellular connection, which does require an active Monitoring subscription. So it cannot be downgraded to Basic App Control.
@x_v there is indeed a phone line connection for the SimpliSafe Original, for the internal dial-up modem. It will work if you have the old style phone lines, but not a digital phone line (like what you might get from a cable provider).
Unfortunately, that connection is so slow that it's not able to support app functions or commands from the app. It's intended as a backup for sending alarm signals only.
