Sensor Locations

I'm setting up a Simplisafe system for the first time.  So far, I have two questions:

1. Motion sensor installation says it should be located at 6 feet off the ground.  Can it be higher?

2. On several types of sensors the instructions are to place them in corners.  For some rooms I don't have a free corner (bookshelves in the way).  Is there a reason I can't place them along the wall?

@lehmann Welcome to SimpliSafe®! For optimal performance, we recommend mounting the Motion Sensor 6 feet from the ground (with its test button facing up), but it can be installed slightly higher than that.

The Motion Sensor has a 90° field of view, so we recommend placing it in a corner so it has an uninterrupted field of view. You can still mount the Motion Sensor on a flat wall or on a shelf, but note that the sensor will only capture motion 90° out from its center. We've included some charts below to show what that looks like in a corner vs. on a flat wall.

Please also note that if you want to place a Motion Sensor on a shelf, make sure that it is as close to the edge at possible.

Similar for the Glassbreak Sensor, we recommend placing it in a corner so it can listen to as many windows as possible. But just as long as the sensor is directly facing the window you want to protect and is within 20 feet of it, it can be placed on a flat surface.

Thank you for your reply.  I've found a corner where I can place the motion sensor 6 1/2' from the floor.  Hopefully this is close enough.  Your pictures of the sensor's horizontal spread were extremely helpful.  Do you have a similar diagram for its vertical range?

Thanks again.

@lehmann If I may add to simplisafe_admin, the motion sensors do quite well on shelves near the edges. I also have one in my unheated garage in Chicagoland and does quite fine there. tip on corner installation:  I couldn't find a straight wall in my my house if my life depended on it and highly recommend 3M felcro strips.  They fill in the gaps in crooked walls quite nicely and taking the removal and putting back process painless. Yes, costs more but you can be sure the motion sensor won't be going anywhere.  (Works fine with glass break sensors too.)

Good luck and congrats on your new system!

Thank you for your input, especially the suggestion about the velcro.  I'm still playing around with the placements and this will give me an easy way to try out different locations.

@lehmann hopefully it will work as well for you as it did for me.  Enjoy your new system
