Separate PIN Codes for Smartlocks

I am in a situation where I need to restrict access to one door but I also need to give someone access to another door. I was looking to be able to set up a pin that would only work for one smartlock, however, that does not appear to be an option. Currently, anyone with a code can open any smartlock connected to the system. If not resolved, I'll be forced to switch to a different ecosystem--ironically--due to security concerns. For now I have resorted to pulling the batteries from the lock and using the deadbolt manually.

Would it be possible to add individual PINs to software in the future or is this a hardware limitation?

Hi @MrLongFace ,

Unfortunately, this is not possible. The Smart Lock uses the same PINs as for disarming the alarm system, and these PINs currently cannot be enabled just for specific Smart Locks.

This is a major security flaw in the Simplisafe ecosystem.  I have multiple codes in my alarm system, but I do not want them all to access my smart lock, just like only the master code can make changes in the alarm system config, but they all can arm or disarm the system.  Like the original poster, this is a deal breaker for me.  I'll have to replace the one I have and not buy any more.

@davey_d when can you implement this? I have same concerns

SimpliSafe needs to prioritize implementing this security improvement! I am about to return the entry sensor lock I purchased just a while ago. There should be a separate PIN to unlock the door and to disarm the system. The PIN SHOULD NOT be linked together to disarm the whole system. This poses a great risk and defeats the purpose of SimpliSafe system making our home secure!

Yes this is important, need to able to have a pin that I can share with known person to unlock the door temporarily without giving the full power to disarm the system. Please fix this.

I also agree with this requirement and hope that Simplisafe address it sooner rather than later!

SimpliSafe,

Its been one year since this post, is there any change to the system to accommodate this request?

@jeffreysmetz This feature request has been submitted to our devs for their consideration, but at this time we do not have an update.

I just installed my lock and my wife's head exploded in our mudroom from finding out that we can't set separate profiles for other people. If she was alive she would want to go to Home Depot and get our Yale lock back

Major security flaw. If someone steals you keypad to lock and brute force pin they can disarm.... please fix

@davey_d  Please help escalate this feature its easy to implement not sure why delay in security critical feature

Unfortunately, it's already been a fair bit over a year with no meaningful response. When I initially reached out I was told it was a hardware limitation (which is obviously a copout answer), so it does not seem that they are all that inclined to push any significant changes anytime soon. As mentioned in my original post, I've switched over to using locks from other brands. While its not under one ecosystem and adds some complexity, I at least don't have to worry about the security concerns, which I see as an absolute win :)

@davey_d any way to check if this has moved up the priority list? This is a really important feature

1 Message

Yes please check if this was moved up the list.  I agree with all previous posts that this is a MAJOR security flaw.  If someone manages to observe or figure out the pin from our Smart Lock then they can enter at night and disarm the entire system without us knowing!!  You should be able to have separate pins so that in this case the alarm would still trigger even if the intruder gained entry via the Smart Lock.  Please please prioritize!

Hi. I need the option to set a pin code for the entrance which won't disarm the system. My daughter is 5 years old and think that all people around her friends, that's why she is telling them everything including the pin code from door. I want that she be able to enter home, but  I need that this code doesn't disarm the system. Here is a huge reason why:

if she shared this code with someone else that person able to open our house and disarm the system at the same time and in best case we will be robbed, but what if it will happen at night while we are sleeping?! We can be killed, kids can be kidnapped!!! Without this option your system is useless and doesn't protect us!!! Please, create the option to choose if pin code disarm the system or not ASAP.

Hope for your understanding, thank you.

Hi @sandornemesny,

The Smart Lock was designed to use the same PINs as the rest of your system so that when you unlock the door, the system also gets disarmed to help prevent potential false alarms. And whenever a system is disarmed, or the Smart Lock is unlocked, you get a push notification and recordings from your cameras (if you have any,) so you are never caught unaware.

But we have also submitted a feature request to our devs for a separate PIN that unlocks the Smart Lock only. We’ll bubble this back up to the team and provide an update in this thread if there is a change in the status of the request.

Hi Emily.

The push notification won't wake me up, I sleep very deep. The Simplysafe won't react either, because the system was disarmed with a PIN code, so I can be caught unaware, and later you and the police will be able to see recordings from the camera, but it will be too late. I need this system to protect and prevent, not to make the investigation easier. I don't care if someone steals my TV during the day, but I need a safe place to rest. It is a huge weakness in your system!!! In the settings, we can create a PIN code for friends, house cleaners, etc., all that we need to add is the option to choose if it can disarm the system or not. Or remove the system disarming from the secondary Pin.

Thank you for the thread link, based on that I can see that this has been an outstanding issue for the last three years with no solution! I guess it is time to look for a better company...

Do you need a software engineer to actually get this done? Cuz if so I am an able and willing one. Being in this profession I know for a fact this should not be a difficult change. This is embarrassing that it hasn't been changed yet.

I agree that it is baffling that such a basic feature was overlooked by the system developers.  I worked in the aerospace industry for 35 years and only encountered such blunders after the software development was outsourced to the cheapest provider.  You get what you pay for.

I really don't understand why Simplisafe is not able to respond to this. Do they need some crisis for them to wakeup to respond to this blaring gap in the setting up the security for the system.

I am sending back my Smart Locks due to the issue with them automatically disarming the alarm - it’s baffling to me that Simplisafe didn’t think through how this could be a security concern for people. I disarm my alarm remotely when certain people need to access my home in order to ensure that they can’t just go in anytime they want, even though they have the door code. And I don’t want to worry that someone looking over my shoulder when I enter my door code will be able to also turn off my alarm and enter without any trouble. I didn’t even think about the different codes for different locks thing, but that is an issue for me too.

I agree. I have SimpliSafe in 4 houses but on this one ill have to get another lock.

I have been reading this thread and am flabbergasted by how long this issue has been going on.

I am among those who have people to whom I would allow a key, in this case, that is what the entry code is, but not full access to the whole system. Sure, they could call me ahead of time and I could disarm it remotely, but part of their responsibility is to be able to get in to check on me if I'm not answering the phone, in which case, I'd want the alarm to go off.
