Base Station disconnected from WiFi after updating to firmware 2.16

Our engineering team has identified a very rare issue where Base Stations may be disconnected from WiFi after updating to firmware 2.16. After attempting to reconnect the Base Station manually, the WiFi router may reject the connection, resulting in an “Incorrect Password” error. The good news is that we were able to correct the issue in the firmware, which has now been re-released.

If you have not yet updated your Base Station to firmware 2.16, it should now be safe to do so. If you have already updated, and if you are experiencing the connectivity issue above, we recommend connecting your system to a different WiFi router or a WiFi hotspot on a mobile device, to download this new version. Once you are able to complete the update process, your Base Station should once again be able to reconnect to your original WiFi router.

Of course, if you continue to experience issues getting your system reconnected to WiFI, please don’t hesitate to let us know in this thread and we will investigate.

Great news!

This issue should now be RESOLVED. Please check the post above for further details.

Not resolved.  Apparently my system was updated yesterday 6/29/2024 at 3:11 pm.  Says base station not connected.    I am very sick.  Account just charged again and cannot use system.   :(

@mtrayn Is your Base Station running the latest firmware - 2.16? You can check which firmware it is running in the mobile app by going to My System > Base Station Settings > Firmware.

If the Base Station is running 2.16 it could be related to this, but if it has an older firmware version this would be a different issue. And don't forget, if you are subscribed to either Fast Protect™ or Standard Monitoring, your Base Station's cellular backup will kick in when it isn't connected to Wi-Fi so it can still communicate to our monitoring center.

I've gone ahead and forwarded your case to our escalated Support team. A senior agent will reach out to you soon to help troubleshoot your system, so keep an ear out for their call!

I don’t believe this is fixed. I’m on 2.17 and I can get the base station to connect to WiFi and then I select check for updates and it has lost the connection. App also no longer connects WiFi. It can’t find it! After years of use it appears the system is now junk. If this is a firmware issue I can’t update to fix it. I have a useless system.

@simplisafe_admin  After installing 2.16.2.3, I can no longer connect to my WiFI (I've done all the resets, reboots removal of basestation and keypad batteries etc).  I keep getting "incorrect password", even though the password is correct (verified by reconnecting other devices to same wifi spot, rebooting wifi endpoint, etc). Anyone else have this problem?

I can connect thru my phone's hotspot to hopefully download a fix for this version should it become available.

@ubbly14 thanks for reporting. That "Incorrect Password" error can also pop up if the Base Station tried to connect to your WiFi router, but was rejected for other reasons, like if the port was blocked or if an incompatible setting was selected. Would you mind providing more info about your WiFi setup?

For example, make and model of the router would be useful, as well as what settings you have enabled for that network (security type, bands, etc.). I can relay this info to our engineering team to investigate further.

I'm having this same issue on two separate base station. One had the firmware update last week and the second one was yesterday. Both have the same issue on my TP-Link deco mesh AC1200 on WPA2 with 2.4 and 5 ghz enable. No connection "incorrect password". I called customer service on the first system and they automatically are sending me a new base station. I ask if the firmware was ok to use and the level 2 tech said yes. So when I got the firmware notice on my 2nd system, I did the firmware update. Now both system are not connecting to the mesh system. A few things to note, one my cameras, outdoor and inside, work on the AC1200. Second the base station will connect to my wireless access point model TP- Link RE505SX, just not the mesh AC1200.

In my case I can connect thru my phone's wifi just fine.  And note the existing router is not problematic with any other wifi connection and of course I made no changes to it apart from rebooting it a few times while troubleshooting this issue.

The router model that is getting "incorrect passsword" is:

System Information

Manufacturer ARRIS

Model Number BGW210-700

Serial Number [Redacted]

Software Version 4.26.11

There really are no unusual settings at all, except I use my own SSID (but again, I've always done that, like many people, and theres no issue anywhere else with it).  I use WPA-2, and both the 2.4G and 5G bands are enabled (and have the same SSID).

But I stress i have not changed anything on this router (apart from rebooting it) and it worked fine with the old version of the basestation firmware, and of course with about a dozen other devices currently connected to it :)

@s_erlanger Yes, I am having the same exact problem.

Having same problem.  Just ran an update on the keypad and now it says no WIFI connection set.  Input CORRECT passwords for both my secure and guest networks...both come up "incorrect password".  This is ridiculous!  Everything working fine for months, years.  Now as of this morning...can't even apply the firmware update showing as ready on the mobile app because it too says that there's an error with network.

There is NO error with my network!  Rebooted, reset, everything.  All devices fine, all routers and mesh extensions fine.  Even the camera is on the network.  But the base station - NOTHING.

What have you done to my system that has been working perfectly for YEARS!?

Unreal.

@DoctorG So I will update my previous post.  Getting the firmware update onto the system was not the problem.  Once I connected to my mobile hotspot (which actually worked on the wifi connection), I was able to complete the firmware update no issues there.  However, still cannot connect to either of 2 wifi networks (running 2.4ghz by the way) as it says, even though they both appear available on the list. Still the "something went wrong, try again" or "incorrect password".

Everything else is ok.  The devices seem connected, the cameras are connected to the wifi correctly still, except for the fact that it doesn't know whether it's armed or not, so the shutter stays closed and just opens when I activate and closes when I stop watching. Kind of a pain. Also can't arm/disarm or otherwise use functions on app or via computer browser to update/edit settings, etc.

I guess my mobile app control is worthless now, except for pulling up the cams, maybe...if that lasts. The big problem with this is if I'm away and its armed, I get no notifications to my phone app if something is tripped...so that renders using it while away pointless.

Insanity.

I am glad I checked this thread before applying the latest software update. It might be specific to a router brand or a bug. Either way, I will wait this one out. I do not need the system not connecting to Wi-Fi.

Yeah, it would be nice if they let us revert to a prior version (I can connect WIFI thru my phone) but that does not seem to be possible :-)

Did you notice SS is getting really cheap, I read in the latest email that they are removing cellular backup for self monitoring plans, so if the bad guy cuts your internet connection, well, having SS is worthless!

@chaz Question: if you are self monitored, the backup is meaningless.  Why should SS pay a line charge that you have chosen not to use?  My apologies if I am missing something.

@chaz just to clarify, if you're talking about the Self-Monitoring w/ Camera Recordings Plan, that has never included the cellular backup connection, because that plan specifically does not include the 24/7 monitoring service. The cellular backup allows the Base Station to keep sending alarm signals to Monitoring if WiFi ever goes down.

Though you also allude a recent email; you may be thinking of a recent correction, where some folks with the Standard Monitoring Plan were getting features that should have been for the Fast Protect™ Monitoring Plan only - like SMS text messages for activity. Both plans still include the cellular backup connection to Monitoring.

At least we get to pay for the app connectivity before an attack?

I'm with captain on this, if you are do not pay for the monitoring service to monitor your home then the cell backup is worthless as you are not paying them so if the alarm goes off it will not go to them as you are not paying them. Unless like captain am I missing something.

I am having the same exact issue. Was all working fine before the latest update rollout.

So, what is the verdict at this point? Would SimpliSafe recommend holding off on applying this update? Is it a problem that is router brand-specific? Is it a bug? I was hoping for an answer by now. If it is the update (in general), I hope SimpliSafe will be cautious against it. Unless I missed it, no reply mentions the update working smoothly (and one suggested Base Station replacement, which, my best guess, has a previous version installed to make the problem disappear, but I could be wrong).

@shiherlis well I haven't had an update yet on mine or at least the newest one pop up yet but judging by all this when I do get it I just might hold off for awhile myself to make sure all goes well.

@shiherlis Our engineering team is diligently investigating this issue. At this time we recommend that you do not update your system to firmware 2.16 until further notice.

Having read the reports of WiFi issues above, I'm holding off on updating as my WiFi is a TP-Link X60 mesh.

Hoping to see a resolution and clean update RSN.

It seems that both May 2024 updates have disappeared.  Clicking the links gives 404 errors.

I installed update 2.16 yesterday. It has caused no problems with my WiFi and I didn't notice any issues until this morning when I went to look at my cameras. I have 3 and all were not working this morning. All settings appeared normal but none would connect...kept getting a message that they were disconnected.

After 2 frustrating hours of troubleshooting I removed them one at a time and did a new install. They are all back working like they should. I have no idea what caused the problem.

@route_66_guy as far as we know so far, this update affected only the Base Station's own connection to WiFi, and should not have affected the cameras (which have their own separate firmware). So I'm still not sure what knocked your cameras off their connections. But I'm glad that resetting was able to restore them.

I'm having this problem.   Hours of troubleshooting with support and no resolution.  Kept blaming my router.  It's not my router.   Nice to see you have hopefully found the problem on your side.

An update...I was having this problem connecting to a T-Mobile Home Internet modem/router.   When I put a tp-link wireless router in-between the SimpliSafe base and the T-Mobile router I can connect the base to the tp-link by wifi and all works ok.

I discovered another problem this morning. After the update my 2 external sirens do not work. Once my delayed entry door is opened I get the countdown beeps from the sirens...today no beeps on either siren. I removed and reinstalled the batteries and now both are working again. Now I am concerned my smoke detectors my not work. When I get some free time tomorrow I am going to do a complete systems check. Just hope nothing new pops up!

I have had the same frustration since the update.

The keypad indicating under diagnostics no WiFi no internet.

Try setting up a Guest network

It worked for me.

Best of luck!

Interesting, sounds like the disconnect problem is getting worse even from firmware 2.15.  Having an Ethernet connection on the base station would be a good idea.

I didn't know about this issue and updated the firmware as usual and now it always says incorrect password for wifi.

Yep, still the same for me.  Literally running flawlessly for years until this.  Now it's pretty much useless. Pretty light on the base station though...sets a nice ambience for the mood. smh

OK, now I am really P*****! My SimpliSafe lost Wifi again this morning for no apparent reason. Now I have one red blinking camera and two others that finally came back online after WiFi was restored.   All of my other WiFi devices, house lights, thermostat, Ring cameras, and weather station all functioned normally during the SimpliSafe "Outage". The message I got on my E-mail:

Your SimpliSafe system, "Home", at ***** has lost its WiFi connection on 05/17/2024 at 9:39 AM

Your SimpliSafe system, "Home", at ***** has regained a WiFi connection on 05/17/2024 at 10:05 AM

I have been an advocate and customer of SimpliSafe for over 10 years. I am leaving on a two week trip in a couple of weeks and now I am concerned SimpliSafe will fail again while I'm gone. I am quickly losing faith  in its reliability.

Before this latest update I never had an issue with my system. If this issue continues I am seriously thinking of going elsewhere for my home protection.

Why was this latest Update needed??  How well was it tested? It has caused me nothing but problems since the day I installed it.  Like the saying goes..."If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
