Apple CarPlay Integration

I had a thought while trying to go to sleep last night. It would be great to have CarPlay enabled in the iOS app. With more and more auto manufacturers integrating CarPlay into their vehicles, it would be a quality of life improvement for many. It would make pulling up in the driveway, opening the garage door, and disarming SimpliSafe a breeze. Additionally, it would also make arming my system, as I pull away from the house, more convenient. Yea, I have a key fob for these purposes, but my Honda utilizes keyless entry/starting, so once keys go into my pocket, it would be nice to not have to pull out either the fob or unlock my phone to arm/disarm the system.

It wouldn't need all the bells and whistles for account and device management, just the ability to arm and disarm, and possibly send push notifications.

SS is not eager to integrate with other companies, because it creates the potential for a hole in secuirty.  Worse, if the other company makes a change, it can disable part of SS, forcing them to change or discontinue the function..

Not trying to be contentious, but this would be totally under SimpliSafe's control. CarPlay apps are just companion apps of an iOS app, just like the existing Apple Watch app, coded by SimpliSafe themselves (or whoever codes their apps). All changes would be completely under SimpliSafe's control.

They would just have to want to do it, and we all know how that goes...

Hi @LazyBrewer,

Thanks for the suggestion as well as the explanation. We have forwarded your ideas to our dev team to consider.

I agree. I was just thinking this myself today! Would be nice to be able to open the app on my screen in the car. Again, I understand security risks and if they have concerns then by all means they should avoid it, but I do hope they entertain it. I mean, it is on Amazon Echo so you can Ask Alexa to do some things, albeit, limited.

My thoughts exactly. So much fumbling. If Apple Carplay allowed for Simplisafe to function while enabled, I’d be able to hit “Home/Away” (depending on if people are still inside) when i drive off and “Off” as i’m pulling up. This really needs to be addressed and taken to the IOS development team. And as far as security is concerned…I’m able to utilize my Simplisafe through my apple watch already (incredibly similar functionality and interface). Plus, i’m not really sure what possible security concerns would arise from making the application accessible through Carplay that don’t already exists. Maybe Simplisafe can start the process with Apple to get it done, but it definitely can and should get done..

@Robby_B thanks for the reply.  I mean of course I’d never want them to do anything to Jeopardize security but what is the difference if it’s on my iPhone and mirroring through CarPlay??  I can tell Alexa to run my alarm on. Alexa is an external system.  So i don’t get that.

I came across this post trying to make the recommendation that SimpliSafe develop a CarPlay compatible app.  This is an excellent idea that would add useful functionality to arming/disarming the system.  Camera viewing and account modifications would not need to be made through the carplay interface.

SimpliSafe, please PLEASE add CarPlay/smart home integration. You’re getting more expensive all the time, please at least let us get some relatively basic functionality. Just about every other security system has these capabilities.

Okay, SimpliSafe, you've been ignoring customer requests that the app be Apple Carplay compatible for three years.  It's not rocket science.  And it's likely to encourage arming the system, much better than staring at a phone while driving.

@ECNess Indeed.

I started this thread almost 3 years ago. Sad to see that it has not received any attention from the development team. It has had 381 views, so it seems there is some interest.

C'mon SimpliSafe...

And in the last couple years, almost every auto manufacturer now includes CarPlay on their vehicles. SimpliSafe, it's time to move on this.

They claim third party integration is a security issue. Let those of us who want it use it, please! Put an “it’s not our fault if someone steals your phone and disarms your house” clause or something in the T&Cs. If I could afford to get a new system, I would.

If it's a third party integration issue, having the app on both my phone and my watch must be super frightening to Simplisafe...

Exactly. Whatever “risks” they’re saying are possible…already exist!

@lazybrewer does yours work on your watch without having the app open on your phone?  Mine sits on "refresh" until I open the app and then it suddenly connects.  It's the most useless thing ever

It’s especially maddening that SimpliSafe hasn’t given the courtesy of a response to its customers for the past three years.

@ECNess This request was submitted to our devs for their consideration, but at this time we do not have an update from them. If/when this request is brought into development, we will let everyone know in this thread.

Maybe I’m being more than a little cantankerous about this but having SimpliSafe available through CarPlay seems like a no brainer. Does the development team get to choose their own priorities?  Never got to do that in my career.

I’m a developer. I work on adding front-end features all the time. Hire me on and I’ll work solely on this project. Now there are no excuses for another 3 years. 2 month maximum end-to-end completion time.

I have a motion sensor in my garage, which is also my shop so the security is necessary. While I drive, everything is on carplay (well, everything except simplisafe) and my phone is in the glove box. I end up having to fumble for my phone or play with my watch while driving to avoid the alarm going off as I pull in. With carplay integration, I could easily disarm the system before I get home and set the alarm off. This is more than a convenience, it's a safety issue. It's 2024 now, get on this!

Adding another comment here, this would be fantastic! Apple car play is just a reflection of the apps on your phone so I don't see the security problems. The only reason I can think of as to why they aren't doing it in my opinion is to try and get more sales for their key fob which doesn't matter with the app. So really who knows, it would be so much easier to have it on the screen I'm already using.

Please enhance the app to run under Apple CarPlay. I thought this was already in development, but maybe I was misinformed previously.

Current s/w Platform: iOS 18.4

My current h/w Platform: iPhone 14 Plus

@PSDesertRat Thank you for this suggestion! We moved your post into its official product request thread. The request for Apple CarPlay integration has been submitted to our devs for their consideration, but it is not in development at this time. We'll bubble the request back up to the team.

It’s beyond disappointing to see that this thread is 4 years old and the development team has not addressed this issue.

You have to do these extra features yourself, as in DIY.  Requires some techy abilities or willingness to learn.

Get yourself a Home Assistant Green, $100 or so, plug in some Ethernet and plug in the USB AC adapter and build from there. Plug & play. Or use other hardware, raspberry pi etc., its open source free software. Warning, it's a rabbit hole and a bit addictive as in, now what can I automate?

It has CarPlay compatibility, Simplisafe integration, SS integration not a picnic to load and SS doesn't help you, but I have SS loaded. And I do geofence arming and disarming.

With it, you can build zones for geofences, arm and disarm with zones, Owntracks device tracking, whatever. Turn on lights, unlock doors, I don't have SS locks and will not ever have any. So that's untested.

Do your due diligence & research. HAOS is capable of thousands of integrations and add-ons, compatible with thousands of ZigBee, Zwave, WiFi devices etc. devices. I can't link it, they'll make it private and you'll never see it. May anyhow.

Or you can wait, looking at the age of the post, it's doubtful it's ever happening, along with many other requests.🚮 Sample below from 2024.

@dlpsr Sadly, your solution, which is brilliant, is far beyond the ability of 99.9% of SimpliSafe users.

I started this thread over 4 years ago and as far as I know, there has been zero movement on it.

Sad.

@lazybrewer Yes that is probably true. Unfortunately. But I keep trying.😉

I've been on and off the forum for two years and it seems for the most part, they want to keep their Simpli system, that they are mostly in control of being a closed system. Without any or very little smart options or any integration to speak of.

But starting to learn is the key. Although HAOS is powerful and has some high tech programming available, YAML, much like HTML used on web pages, it also does if this then that type GUI. And has a learning curve like any powerful software and app.

If a person can handle IFTTT, Google Home or Alexa automations, they can learn HAOS GUI. If patient. Yaml comes on later. Help is everywhere online and an Ai can be your friend. Sometimes.. 😂

If they have trouble with keeping Simplisafe or their WiFi running or using a cell phone, it's probably not for them.

It's my old age hobby. Keeps the gray matter active.

Good luck!

Yeah...I have neither the time nor desire to build a workaround like that. I probably COULD if I had both. But I shouldn't have to.
