Updating Your SimpliSafe® System

Updated

Want to know what's in the latest update?

Check out our release notes on the SimpliSafe® Community!

Your SimpliSafe® System requires periodic firmware updates to receive the latest features, security upgrades, and more. The way your system updates depends on the current firmware version your system is running.

Not sure what version of the firmware is installed on your system? You can check the version at any time using the SimpliSafe® Mobile App.

Please note: Your system must be connected to Wi-Fi to receive firmware updates. You can learn more about connecting your system to Wi-Fi on our Help Center.

If your System is Running Firmware Below 2.15

For systems running a version of firmware below 2.15, you will need to manually update your system. You can do this using the SimpliSafe® Mobile App or your Keypad.

Using the SimpliSafe® Mobile App:

  1. Open the SimpliSafe® Mobile App on your phone or tablet

  2. You should see a tile on the Overview tab detailing there’s an “Update Available”

  3. You may also manually check for updates using the following steps:

    1. Choose My System from the bottom navigation bar

    2. Select Base Station Settings

    3. If an update is available, it will say so to the right of “Firmware”

Using the Keypad:

  1. Press Menu

  2. Enter your Master PIN

  3. Select System Settings

  4. Then, Check for Updates

If your System is Running Firmware Version 2.15 or Greater

For systems running firmware version 2.15 or greater, updates will occur automatically after you disarm your system and it has been disarmed for at least 10 minutes. This ensures that you are never without protection when your system updates and that you’re home during the update process. You’ll be able to tell that an update is running when you see an amber or orange-colored light circling the Base Station, similar to a “searchlight”. You can tell when an update occurred by checking the Message Center within the SimpliSafe® Mobile App.

Camera Updates

Cameras and Video Doorbells update automatically, so long as your Base Station is running the latest firmware version. If motion is detected or an alarm is triggered during the camera firmware update, the update will pause during the event so you're never without protection.

Smart Lock Updates

Smart Lock updates need to be manually applied to your lock using the SimpliSafe® Mobile App. You can learn more about updating your Smart Lock and troubleshooting update issues for it on our Help Center.

If your system fails to update, whether it happens through automatic updates or manually requesting an update within the SimpliSafe® App, there are a few steps you can take to resolve this.

  1. Reboot your Router and/or Modem

    1. As a first step, we recommend rebooting your router and/or modem.

    2. To reboot it, you’ll typically unplug the device(s) from power for at least 30-60 seconds.

    3. Then, wait about 3-5 minutes for your Internet to be restored, and SimpliSafe® to reconnect.

    4. Then, attempt to run the update again through the SimpliSafe® App

      1. Choose My System from the bottom navigation bar

      2. Select Base Station Settings from the list of menu options

      3. Next to Firmware, tap on “Update Available”

      4. Follow the on-screen instructions to run any updates, as necessary

  2. Reset your Base Station

    1. Unplug the Base Station from power by removing the cable from the bottom of the Base Station

      1. Wait at least 60 seconds

      2. OR until the SimpliSafe® Mobile App states “Power Outage” on the timeline

    2. Using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove the screw on the bottom of the Base Station

    3. Take off the bottom cover to expose the battery compartment

    4. Remove a single battery from the Base Station

      1. Wait 60 seconds, then reinsert the battery

    5. Plug the Base Station back into power

    6. After 60 seconds, a “Power Restored” message should populate on the timeline within the SimpliSafe® App

    7. Next, arm your system to HOME mode, then disarm it by setting it to OFF

    8. This will ensure that the message clears from the mobile app and test that your system is properly arming and disarming itself
