Using temperature sensor as heat detector

Anyone with the temperature sensor able to confirm it can go to 135 degrees so it can be used as a heat detector.

Plan is to use in kitchen where we have the dryer and washing machine etc so we can get alerted if fire there before spreads through utility room, kitchen, dining room before smokes detect

Goes up to 141 degrees :-)

No. Max is 127°F.

My temperature sensor doesn't seem to update at frequent intervals. Checking my dashboard just now, it shows the temperature was updated 4 days ago. Don't know if this is normal and never took time to pursue the issue.

Hi all,

The Temperature Sensor for the All-New SimpliSafe system can be set to trigger an environmental alarm when the temperature exceeds the value set by the user. This value can be set between 127° F (~53° C) and 1° F (~ -17° C).

While your dashboard will not always automatically update to the latest temperature reading, be assured that the Temperature Sensor does report the temperature to your Base station every hour.

Thank you Team S.

So I could set mine to trigger if temperature exceeded 127.

Would this sound the sirens in house or only trigger notification and call.

My thoughts are to use it as a head sensor in kitchen / utility area where it could be an early warning sign of fire (where a smoke detector isn't an option).

For me I have 5 SS smokes and if this works as a heat detector in kitchen it would give me an extra minute of detection.

By sounds of it the environmental alarm will be like how the water sensor works? where it will trigger phone alert and call but not sound the sirens.

would be great to get a heat sensor that sounds siren.   In UK its now law that a heat sensor must be installed in a kitchen before the property can be sold... and linked to sirens or other smokes so it would be brilliant to get that going as the sales for UK subscribers would be sold easily with that integration and change of name.

If the update frequency is every hour, to me, it's of dubious value for a fire sensor.

Also, for smoke and I'd expect fire/temp sensors too, I think there are certifications that apply. I'd check to be sure these are certified by the applicable agencies before using them in a situation requiring legal compliance.

Dandy, I think the WATER-sensor DOES sound the base station alarm (not your db siren) - it's a slightly different alarm sound, and coming from the base, along with a call from monitoring, but of course no dispatch (can also get text alert just like your other sensors if triggered).  Might want to confirm with SS if it's the same for the temperature sensor (if base sounds alarm or not).

@coltmaster1    The water sensor does contact monitoring.  Mine detected a leak in the furnace room and I got a call from monitoring. There was no alarm sounding in the house when I got home.  Thankfully

While we do not recommend relying on the Temperature sensor for your desired purpose, coltmaster1 is correct in that it will trigger an audible alarm from the base station, similar to the Water sensor. Both the Water and Temperature Sensors will trigger an Environmental Alarm on your base station as well as a call from the monitoring center. Unlike the Burglary Alarms, however, instead of the siren starting to blare it will beep four times with increasing volume and then state the type of sensor that triggered the alarm; the message will then repeat.

@simplisafe_admin is simplisafe working on a heat sensor for garage fire detection purposes? Smoke alarms are not for garages, heat sensors are. This would be a huge help if they came out with one!

If you are using the temperature sensors as an early warning before a fire breaks out, it is a problem that you only get a report once per hour.  So, is it possible to mount multiple temperature sensors near each other and have them each report at a different time, asynchronously, so that you can create a shorter interval overall?

Useless trying to convince Simplisafe to produce such a product.  Don't know why they won't.  My fire department has recommended not using a smoke detector in areas like the garage where smoke is likely from exhaust gas.  I don't know why they don't have a device that triggers when sensing element detects an abnormal temp rise over a short period of time and sends a signal to the base station.  This type of sensor is needed yet they won't listen to the suggestion as I have asked multiple times for them to consider.  This is the one thing that frustrates me about this company.

@aswierz

Yes , we need this real-time heat detector. With all the lithium batteries for all the e-bikes, razor scooters, other toys, and power tools, this product is really needed!

@aswierz I certainly hear you! The request for a heat sensor has been submitted to our dev team for their consideration. Once we receive any news from them, an update will be provided in this thread

Since you are considering a heat sensor, I would like it to go the other way also, say down to -40 degrees F.  This way I could use it as an outdoor alert system too.

thanks for this consideration..

heat detector set to 127F seem very low for an attic space, looking online 200F is recommended, please verify I will not get false alarms.  thanks

@kevdanc you will get a false alarm everyday. Your attic reaches upwards of 140°F for several months out of the year.

It's been 9 months since submitting a request for such a device.  Now, unless the Chinese do all of Simplisafe's device designs, I would guess that it might take a few days to integrate a true thermocouple heat detector into the system using components that they already have available.  There are companies already out there who have these things so why does Simplisafe ignore customer requests?  In fact, here's a website that already has them:  https://www.alarmsystemstore.com/collections/heat-detectors.  So come on Simplisafe development group it's way overdue.  If you don't know how to do it in house then subcontract an electrical engineer who freelances in this area.  I'm sure that there are many out there.  That's what I used to do when I was an engineer in charge of development for several major companies.  Heck, subcontract it out to a local university.  Bet there's an electrical engineering student out there who'd appreciate a little extra cash.

did ss ever respond, my requests get crickets!

The silence is deafening.  Seems I can't even embarrass this crew into doing something that would bring them additional revenue.  Hear that Simplisafe--ADDITIONAL REVENUE.

I just ordered a smoke/CO detector to replace a smoke detector in my basement.  I might try to open the detector up and see how difficult it would be to replace the ionization element with a button sensor that I have left over from a previous system I had installed.  It might give me a little more insight that I could then use to try and shame them again into developing a heat detector.  Stay tuned for updates if I can get these people to respond to our requests. Keep badgering them if you want.  Couldn't hurt to have several customers pushing them into action.

Heat detector.

Simplisafe. Please design and sell a heat detector for the fire alarm system. Preferably a Heat detector that is Rate of Rise indicating temperature increase within about 30 seconds. Or a heat detector that can be programmed to alarm at 135°F or 200°F.

I also asked them on the phone years ago.  Something as simple as a rate of rise heat detector.  For the life of me I cannot understand why SS won’t do this.   How about one of your C suite execs addressing for us why this is too difficult for SS

The old ADT alarm system in this house, that I replaced with the more modern SS system when I bought the house, had heat detectors in the attic and garage.  Maybe I should ditch SS and go back to ADT.  What say you about that SS?

37 Messages

SS won't say anything about it.  Their arrogance is overwhelming.  You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make SS drink the MANY requests it's had for a heat detector in its fire alarm subsystem.  If there is a competitor out there with as simple a system as SS offers and it has heat detectors you can bet I'll switch in an instance.  So far there isn't which is why they can rest on their laurels, but beware SS your day's will be numbered if you continue to refuse to listen to your customers.
