Questionable SimpliSafe invoice for "County Tax - Alarm Permit"

I have a bill here from my city's police department for their annual fee of $41.00 for an Alarm Permit, which I paid online, having registered my alarm with them last year and received my permit number.

I checked my account with SimpliSafe and see that last month, they invoiced me $36.00 for a "County Permit Tax." I called SimpliSafe to see if this was the same thing, and they said no, it was for the County. The PD said that SimpliSafe (and other alarm companies) pay the PD/city's permit fee fee on initial installation (which was in 2023), but that residents pay subsequent annual permit fees directly to the PD. Which is why I got the bill. They don't know anything about a County permit fee.

I called the County, and they've never heard of a county permit fee for an alarm, and asked to see the invoice, which I'm sending them.

Any help, Simplisafe?

@amarie Now that you went to the trouble to post about this $36 charge, suggest you call customer service and ask by phone for the agent to explain it. I have been a SS customer for 12+ years and I am sure they will reverse it if in error. Given county (and other forms of government), it may well be SS was charged again.

Please post the outcome of your call here if  you get a chance. Thanks!

Thanks. I did call support before i posted here. The rep just kept repeating that it was a county permit tax fee. She looked up my account and confirmed it. She "talked to her supervisor" for a few minutes and came back to the phone and just repeated that yep, that's what it was.

@amarie Escalate to a supervisor or manager.

Hi @amarie,

This appears to be a duplicate permit fee that was sent to you on error. I've sent your case to our escalated Support team - a specialist will call you soon to help, so keep an ear out for their call!
