Water Sensor Problem

Yesterday I received my Water Sensor.  After I installed it I set it in 1/4 inch of water to test it.  It immediately triggered an alarm!  COPS was soon on the phone asking if everything was OK.  They canceled the alarm.

I then went into the Keypad to change the settings of the water sensor, but to my dismay there is no way to change the setting!  I just want Secret Alert to notify me, and not the call center.  Why wasn't that provided when the sensor was developed??  I have since deleted it from my system  because I don't want anymore false alarms.

Is there anyway SimpliSafe can correct the software to include Secret Alerts?  The limitations of selecting settings is a huge detriment to using this sensor. I DO NOT want the Control Center to respond to my water sensor....I want a Secret Alert only.  Is the Control Center going to send a plumber!

Until this issue is fixed my water sensor will remain unconnected from my system.

@route_66_guy Hi, long time no hear!  Hope all is well.  I installed 4 water sensors years ago (had them with my SS2 also) and they work great. They are sensitive to moisture (go figure) so make sure there is sufficient distance if any "splashbacks" like from the sump or your washing machine.  If they are tripped, yes, montiroing center will call you, however, there is no disptach steps taken after that. If they don't reach you, again, no dispatch.  You do make a good point, however, if that if you have the interactive deluxe plan, you can get secret alerts and would be nice if you could turn off the monitoroing center calling.

Let's try this: Attention Simplisafe: want to reduce costs by making it an option not to have your new deluxe monitoring center not have to call on water sensors? Increase capacity per FTE and....ready for it....increase customer satisfaction for Route 66 Guy and me...and a few others I am sure!

Hey Captain, thanks for the response. Yes, it has been awhile since I've posted here.  That's mainly because my system has been error free for the past couple of years and I have no complaints until my water sensor triggered an alarm.  The main reason I bought it was because the water line on our refrigerator going to the water / ice dispenser split and water was going everywhere.  I always turn off the main water line when we are gone for an extended time just for this reason.

I was going to place it behind the  fridge to let us know if there was ever another problem.  After the alarm incident I was surprised to see that there were no provisions to have it text a secret alert. It went direct to the call center.  They were calling and texting me in less than 30 seconds asking if I needed help.  They are sure fast, which is impressive!

I saw on another post you were interested in a whole house remote water shutoff.  After my experience with the leaky water line I went searching for something similar.  I found a few on Amazon, some around 40 bucks that use Bluetooth.  The are mechanical and move the existing water valve.  I have investigated it further, but still thinking about it.

I may reinstall the water sensor knowing that the Call Center won't dispatch anyone to the house, but still hoping that a software change can be made to included Secret Alerts.  Thanks again for your response!

First, I've never had a live person call me when a water sensor went off so if that's happening now that's a change. (I pay for the top tier monitoring service as well.) It's always been a recorded message that tells me either a water or temperature sensor went off and that's it. I've never spoken to a person for these sensors, ever.

For kicks, and because I'm curious, I just tested a water sensor alarm twice and both times I received:

- A phone call with an automated message telling me a water sensor had been triggered

- A text indicating a water sensor had been triggered and that emergency services would not be contacted

- A push notification from the mobile app telling me a water sensor had been triggered

For kicks on the second test while I was listening to the recorded message I dried off the sensor and triggered it immediately and the recorded message told me there was a second alert and they were forwarding me to a person. I've not seen this behaviour before but I've also never triggered it multiple times back to back.

Second, I'm all for additional functionality and your use cases and requirements aren't mine and vice versa. That said, I'll never understand the request to NOT have your phone blow up in every way possible for a water leak. Water damage can happen quickly and be very very expensive. Also when you have secret notification on for other sensors it doesn't even make noise at the base station and that seems downright dangerous. You could have hundreds of gallons of water blasting through your house while you're at home because you missed the "beep" from your phone and chose secret notification so the bae station never made a sound. To each their own, for sure.

FYI, I've got literally 10+ sensors and I've never had a false alarm. If they get wet, they go off. If they stay dry, they don't. I've had them for years and they've even survived being smacked around by the cat a few times and they still didn't go off.

@worthing I like your testing method!  As far as live or recorded, I haven't had a water sensor go off in years (sump pump incident) and at that time it was a live person. The recorded call makes more sense and an improvement, as it frees up time for agents to handle intrusion alarms which is very important. As far as the multiple notices, you are not all wet (pun intended) on your damage comments.  My insurance company, Liberty Mutual, provides a large discount each year for our system, and water sensors account for the majority of it, with smoke and co sensors far behind.

I have had a water sensor in the bathroom for two years.  It now goes off even when floor is dry.  Changed battery.  Same thing happens.  Bad sensor now?

@stanww The Water Sensor knows to trigger an alarm when a conducting material (like water) touches the metal contacts on the bottom of the sensor. You mention that your Water Sensor is in your bathroom; high humidity or condensation could trigger a false alarm. I would try wiping off the sensor's metal contacts with a dry rag and then slightly changing its location in your bathroom.

If you continue to experience false alarms after taking those steps, you may need a replacement sensor - our Support team can help with that.
