SimpliSafe App without Monthly Plan

We just recently installed our SimpliSafe system. We want to use our SimpliSafe system without any monthly plan. I keep reading online, on Youtube, on Amazon reviews and on this SS Community Forum that much of the functionality of the app would be disabled if we do not sign up for any monthly plan. Many responses on this subject I saw online were from at least six months or years ago. Have SimpliSafe changed its "app without subscriptions policy" since?  I hear that Ring and Nest Alarm allow you full use of their app even without signing up for their monthly plan. Can we still use the app on our cellphone to arm and disarm the alarm if we don’t sign up for any SimpliSafe monthly plan? Will someone please give me the latest update on this? Thanks.   John

Hi @johntipo, 

There are some app features that are only available with a paid monitoring plan - like Secret Alerts and Scheduled Arming. Without a paid monitoring plan, you’ll still be able to remotely arm and disarm your system through the app, view a live video feed of your cameras, snooze camera notifications, and receive push notifications when there is an alarm or an error with your system.

I just called into customer service to cancel our monthly plan and was told we would only be able to use the physical pieces of the system and that the app would be disabled.  I said, “So the cameras won’t work?” And he said, “They will work, you just won’t be able to use them.” 
I asked the question multiple times in different ways to be sure I was getting it right and he repeatedly said I wouldn’t be able to use those features like live feed w/o the $10 month self-monitoring plan.

@dbeigs​ I'm afraid you were given incorrect information. With our free Basic App Control plan you will still be able to access and control your system through the app. Your cameras will not be able to save any recordings, but you will still be notified when they detect motion and can watch a livestream through them.

@emily_s​ if I only get alarms (no cameras) and do the free plan, can I still get notifications through the if an alarm is triggered if I do not pay for a monthly subscription?

Emily, what about if you have the free plan (zero monthly payment) and a regular entry sensor alarm is triggered (forget cameras for now).  Do I get PUSH and email notifications that an alarm was triggered?

@Pack​ You will receive push notifications whenever an alarm is triggered, but email notifications are not available with the free, Basic App Control plan.

I have a similar question. I was under the impression that I could use the app without the monitoring system monthly plan… I thought I could still arm and disarm my home. I went to the app to arm it tonight, and every single sensor is gone from the app. I had around 15 of them, and it seems Simplisafe has erased them all after “cancelling” my plan?? In this case, how can I use the app?

@jessicaca44​ You can access your system through the SimpliSafe mobile app without being subscribed to a paid monitoring plan. 

When you log into the app, is there a home icon on the top right corner? If so, tap that icon and you should be able to pull up your system. But if there is not, please contact our Support team for further assistance.

If I only get alarms (no cameras) and choose the free plan, can I still get push notifications from the app if an alarm is triggered if I do not pay a monthly fee?

@charismamesserIf you are subscribed to our free Basic App Control plan, you will still get push notifications from the SimpliSafe app if an alarm is triggered.

Had basic plan decided did not need since I don’t have camera, cancelled and they removed my whole system, no longer exists was told yes if you remove a paid plan you need to reinstall you system and all components - brand new system set up is now required and all the configuration!

Something to consider, if you don't pay for a monitoring plan you can't cancel an alarm (even a false alarm) from the app anymore. The alarm will continue to sound until you physically go onsite to cancel it.

@dodongdakz69​ If you have monitoring now, you are "forced" to call their retention department to downgrade to self monitoring.

If its a new in box never commissioned, just open the app and add new system and follow the directions.

Take care doing that, there are upgrade monitoring buttons to accidentally everywhere.

@dodongdakz69 if you are already subscribed to a monitoring plan and would like to downgrade to the Basic App Control plan, please call our support team and our agents can downgrade your system to that plan.

Do the Smart Lock 2 work in the app with no subscription plan?  Also, I don't see anything online about the $10 a month cloud save plan for cameras, is that really a thing?

@JobaFett yes, even without a monthly paid plan, you can still use the Smart Lock and lock/unlock is using the SimpliSafe mobile app. 

 

We do offer the Self-Monitoring with Camera Recordings monitoring plan, which is $9.99 per month. You can learn more about this plan, and others, in the What are the service plan options article in our Help Center.

@buntyvemula If you choose forgo a monitoring plan, your Glassbreak Sensors and Water Sensors will still work. If they are ever triggered, you will receive a push notification from the SimpliSafe® mobile app.

If you're getting a security system, don't get simplisafe. It's a scam. You can't use it unless you pay monthly.

@seanbkillian While a monitoring subscription is required to access certain features, like 24/7 emergency dispatch and scheduled arming, you can still use the system when subscribed to our free, Basic App Control plan.

 

When on this plan, you can still livestream your cameras, remotely arm/disarm your system, and be notified whenever a camera detects motion or an alarm is triggered. For more details on what every plan offers, see the What are the Monitoring Plan Options article in the Help Center.

I want to cancel the plan but this is what customer service agent told me:

“Ok, once service is cancelled, you void the remaining lifetime warranty protecting your equipment, access to the cellular back-up communication and the ability to use the SimpliSafe® App for system notifications as well as the ability to control your system remotely, and view video camera recordings for up to 30 days.”

Can I still monitor the camera and control alarm remotely after canceling the monthly plan (zero payment)?

@enyashaoanchang​ You Don't want to Cancel. Call back, tell them you want to downgrade to self monitoring.

You will void any warranties past one year, you can arm and disarm local or remotely, siren will go off etc. local only, no monitoring calls. You will lose celluar backup.

You will receive notifications of detections from cameras & minor stuff, you will only have live view on any cameras.

If you need recordings, downgrade to self with recordings, the $9.99 plan. See plans.

If not needed, then just downgrade to self monitoring.

It must be a desperate retention attempt or something or their retention agents are inept and poorly trained.

From personal experience though not all of them are unhelpful & rude, so try again.

@enyashaoanchang If you completely cancel your account, you will lose access to your system. But if you choose to downgrade to our free, Basic App Control plan, you will still:

  • Receive push notifications about your system
  • Arm/disarm it remotely
  • View a livestream of your cameras
