Do I need to have paid monitoring?

I have a full system with monitoring and love it. I decided to put a system into an elderly relatives house so we can monitor via camera in case they fall and have sensors to make sure they don't leave any doors or windows open. I added monitoring via the app, but then decided it wasn't necessary as the relative won't use the alarm and it's just for the family to monitor.  When I called to cancel monitoring I was told they would remotely factory reset my system. I said "no, I need the system" I was then told if I didn't get at least basic monitoring then my entry sensors would no longer work. This does not seem right to me.

@pgwren If you completely cancel your SimpliSafe account, your devices will not function. But if you ask to downgrade your system to our free, unmonitored Basic App Control plan, your system will still function, and your Entry Sensors will remain active. 

 

If an Entry Sensor is tripped, the Base Station's siren will sound, but you will not receive a call from our monitoring center. And with the Basic App Control plan you can still livestream through your cameras and will be notified when they detect motion, but they will not record or store any videos.

Thank you. Your representative told me if I downgraded to the unmonitored basic app control plan, then my entry sensors would not function at all.
