Gen 2 Motion Sensors

Greetings SS folks.

I have a four OG motion sensors.  Over the years I have taken them all offline because they are the only things that cause false alarms.  Nothing like being woken up from a sound sleep in the middle of the night by the burglar alarm going off.  I do not have any pets and nothing in any of my rooms has changed that could account for this.  I just think that the motion sensors are not very well done for this product.

I was wondering if the second generation sensors would be better in some way that the current ones or if they're just the same thing with better integration to the app.  I don't care about the pet aspect.  The other question I have is if there's some way to trade in the ones that I have sitting in a box of E-Waste waiting for when I find some place that can take them for the new ones, or at least to get a discount on new ones?

Thanks.

Hello @usmaak,

There are a few differences between the Motion Sensor Gen 1 and Gen 2.

The Motion Sensor Gen 2 can detect motion within 35 feet, while the Motion Sensor Gen 1 can detect motion within 30 feet. The main difference between the devices is that the Motion Sensor Gen 2 has Pet Mode, which allows the device to tell the difference between humans and pets. Aside from that, the two devices are the same.

Both generations of the Motion Sensor use passive infrared (PIR) to detect sources of heat moving around the room. False alarms can happen if the temperature suddenly changes in the room, so we would want to look and see if there are any heating vents or air conditioning units near the Motion Sensors.

There are a few other environmental triggers that could cause the Motion Sensor to false alarm - like if sunlight suddenly hit the sensor, the device detected a bolt of lightning that caused light/heat, or if a small insect crawled right in front of it.

We do not have a trade-in program for the Motion Sensors. But if none of the factors I mentioned above could have triggered a false alarm in your home, that may indicate an issue with the device itself. In that case, our Support team can provide additional assistance, and replace the sensors if needed.
