Batteries for the sensors/keypads

For the keypads i use Good quality rechargeable NiMH batteries. I recharge the batteries every 3 months whether they need it or not.
entry sensors CR2032 watch battery, or whatever check yours first before you buy.
motion and glass break , for the motion i use rechargeable CR123A, The glass break uses the same though I have found that after a few weeks , says low battery low so I bought some Lithium CR123 batteries  just for the glass break sensors.

Hi bjackson1,

Good info! Yep, the key advantage of lithium batteries is that they're good for low-drain, long-term applications. We figured most folks would be fine with replacing them completely if you only need to do it every 3 years or more.

My CR123 battery did not last 3 years or more!  Need to be able to see in the app the battery level on each device.  Does not make any sense on battery sensors that a user does not see this information.

bschatzow,

Ironically, polling battery levels takes up extra battery power. So the system doesn't do that constantly. But you will get a "Low Battery" warning when the levels are getting close to low.

However, if sensor batteries are not lasting the expected 3-5 years, we might need to troubleshoot - something might be affecting battery performance.
Or if you're getting a "Sensor Error", that means the sensor is failing to check in, which could be caused by other things, like severe physical or wireless interference.
Either way, we strongly suggest giving our Support team a call at 800-548-9508 and we can help you figure it out!

My system did not give me a low battery warning and the keypad died.

If your answer is true and you do not use polling  how does the system know when the battery is low. I have many battery operated devices ( from other companies sensors, to watches to smart phones), they all have battery notifications. At the very least your sensors should have a way for the user to force it into a mode to check. I never saw the indication that my motion sensor battery was low. I just saw that the sensors was unavailable.

I don't believe he said they didn't do polling, what he said is they don't do it constantly.

Well, I have also asked for this feature. If your system does polling occasionally, JUST REPORT IT TO US when you get the result, so we can take action. That does not seem too complicated.

I recently had an issue where I had a smoke alarm in a room that we seldom visited. The battery probably went into the beeping stage but we didn't hear it, and didn't see it on my timeline. Then, it was about to fail, it sent a fire signal and the fire department came out.

That would not have happened if you gave us an indication of where the battery levels were.

I would replace mine sooner than later and if I bought them from you, Simplisafe would probably sell more batteries!

Anyway not trying to make trouble because I love SimpliSafe but just asking for more communication about the condition of our systems.

@rlord469 we do not have a specific brand of batteries we recommend for our sensors. As long as the proper battery type is placed in the sensor, you're good!

I have multiple motion sensors in my system.  Reliability has been a major issue.  I have always used Duracell and Energizer batteries.  The problem is the sensors stop working and you don't get any notification.  I have gone round and round with Simplisafe support over this.  They have done the troubleshooting, have sent me some replacement motion sensors but they all behave exactly the same.  Ironically, the old type motion sensor that I still have does not seem to have this problem.  It always works.  The new type ones are always a problem.

When I happen to notice that one of the sensors is no longer detecting motion, test it and it says it is working.  Then it may work for a little while before it stops again.

Sometimes, I just remove the battery cover, spin the battery or pull it out and put it back in and it works for a little while before it fails again.  I have checked the batteries with a multimeter when this happens and they are always at least 3 volts.

The only solution is to put a new battery in and then it will work for maybe a month or two and then it happens again.

I just did a walkaround in front of all of my motion sensors.  The only one that worked is the old type one.

I unplugged the base station and removed the batteries, waited a minute and put them back in then plugged it back in.

Did another walkaround. Same result.
