Outdoor Camera is Detecting Cars in "People Only" Mode

My outdoor camera faces the road in front of my house. It is set to "people only" mode with medium sensitivity. Even though it is set to "people only," it still detects cars that drive by. If I change the sensitivity to low, then people don't get detected at all (even when they walk right up to my door). If I block out the road on the camera's activity zone, cars in the blocked zone still get detected, but people walking on the sidewalk next to the road don't. My firmware is up to date and I've uninstalled/reinstalled the app on my phone several times. Does anyone else have this issue? How do I fix this?

Hi @iroquoisplzkn ,

It sounds like those settings are not sticking properly. Have you already tried toggling them off, saving the settings, then toggling them back on again? That would send the settings to the camera's memory again.

Another thing to try is to reset the camera's firmware. You can do that by pressing and holding the button in the back for 16 seconds. When you release, the camera will factory reset, and you can reinstall it like a new camera in the SimpliSafe app.

Yes, this is the exact same thing that has been happening to me since I installed my new outdoor camera a couple weeks ago. Glad I am not the only one who was going mad over this! Did you perform the factory reset @iroquoisplzkn ? And if so, does it work properly now with the motion detection settings? I am about to do this once my battery charges back up again, since I have had to recharge it once a week due to the camera constantly turning on when it isn’t suppose to. :( :( :(

Mine will do the same but only if a car is going real slow by but if they are driving normal or faster then I get nothing but I don't care if it does get a car here and there as I have had it on all motion but it would catch the people across the street in there yard lol

So I completely factory reset and removed the camera from my system and reinstalled it. Unfortunately however, it still detects movement from cars in blocked out zones. This means I have to keep it on people only mode, even though it would be nice to know when someone pulls into my driveway in a vehicle (my driveway is directly beside the road).

I have literally sat and watched several times, thinking maybe something else outside of the block out zones was getting picked up, but I can guarantee the camera is definitely ONLY catching cars that go down the road, even though the entire road has been blocked out in the camera settings. I have intentionally positioned the camera so that none of the road is in a driveway zone on my camera. I have even relocated the camera to two other location views of the driveway, and still the same problem. This really needs to be fixed, and definitely isn’t working as advertised.

Ours does the same thing, (door bell camera too) particularly if the car has lights on and it th outside lights have not come on.

@krstrick yes, exact same thing with car lights here as well.

@krstrick yes my doorbell camera is also sensitive at night to vehicles without the porch light on. We just have to keep it on and that solves the issue.

As far as the outdoor camera is concerned, maybe try changing the angle of your outdoor camera if possible. There may be a “sweet spot” like I have found. Basically, it involved just cutting out the camera’s long view of oncoming traffic from down the road at a distance. Now there is more of a “flat” horizontal view that it is looking at vehicles only traveling by very briefly now, where previously looking at traffic coming both toward and away from the house must be doing something to trigger it. You might try slightly rotating the camera clockwise or counterclockwise within the current view it has as well. Hopefully some trial and error will get it working correctly for you!

Here is a screen shot of a previous response to this issue. Unfortunately though, it would appear that the motion detection during the daytime does NOT analyze appropriately when zone settings are applied - day or night. I really hope they are able to figure out a way to work around this issue in the future:

Update: I adjusted the outdoor camera view to not be able to view oncoming traffic from a distance. It can still see a couple of sections where vehicles pass it’s view, just not over a lengthy span. I blocked out the 2 squares on the grid which can briefly view vehicles passing. SO FAR, so good and I have had no false alerts for about an hour with many cars constantly driving by. I have even been able to take the camera off of people only mode, so now it will hopefully detect any entries, person or vehicle which enters my driveway. I will reply here again if anything should change.

@blondebrainscans yea angle is the key as well as it took me some time to get it right as well so hope it all works out for you

@lance843 Yes! I was able to get it working correctly it looks like. I have had no false alerts from vehicles, or any false alerts at all for that matter. It looks like it is working perfectly this evening in the dark as well.

@franksellsrvsThe Outdoor Camera has two motion detection types: People Only and All Motion. With People Only on, the camera will only detect human-shaped objects - with All Motion on, it will detect any motion. Since you want your camera to register both people and cars, I would recommend setting it to All Motion.

You can also set up Activity Zones to control the areas that your camera will monitor. For example, if your camera faces a busy street and you don't want it to notify you whenever a car drives by, you can create an Activity Zone for it. If you don't want your camera to monitor areas outside of your yard, it may be helpful to use the Activity Zone feature.

You can learn more about the different settings the Outdoor Camera has in this Help Center article

Hopefully you found a solution because they gave me the run around and are now just sending me a new doorbell. They keep telling me to angle it down but can't provide me with a solution to do so since the current bracket only makes it level on my siding. I have it set at low, every zone blocked out apart from the very bottom row, and set to people only. Guess what...It picks up cars and not people...

I never figured it out. I cycled the battery a few times (which only took a couple days since it was getting triggered constantly) and eventually it started working as it should. Now it just triggers as people walk away so it never catches their face or doesn’t catch them at all. This system is useless.

That has to be a faulty camera. My will pick up only people and sometimes animals if not on all motion. All Motion wears your batteries down quick. Worse thing about them is when it's raining, they can't see a thing clearly

Mine picks up hanging baskets and shadows. So we can’t have flowers on our porch, but there’s nothing I can do about the trees. Windy days are especially bad.

@iroquoisplzkn Do you have Activity Zones set up on your Outdoor Camera? With Activity Zones you can block the camera from detecting motion in certain areas, like anywhere where there's tree branches. You can enable Activity Zones in the SimpliSafe mobile app by navigating to My System > Camera Settings > select [your camera] > Motion Detection > Activity Zones.

Regarding the camera's wake up time, to preserve battery life the Outdoor Camera enters deep sleep when it is not actively recording motion. To wake up, the camera relies on its connection to the Base Station, so it can help to move the Base Station closer to this camera. We are also rolling out a new Performance Mode feature that disables the Outdoor Camera from entering deep sleep when it's plugged into a power source. You can learn more about Performance Mode here.

They replaced my doorbell camera 3 times. It STILL DOESN'T record anything except trucks and occasionally cars. I have called at least 10 times and they keep telling me that a specialist will call me and it NEVER happens. I'm gonna have to junk this and find a REAL camera doorbell that actually works

@diva1104 I'm sorry to hear about all of this trouble. I just connected with our internal teams and I can confirm that a specialist will reach out to you soon to get to the bottom of this. Keep an ear out for their call!

I have the same issue as others with it detecting cars in people only mode.  I am unable to use zones to block the road as it would block the top half of a person on my sidewalk/front porch.  If i could angle the camera down more i could use activity zones to see if they would help.   Since this thread has been going on for over a year (i am a new customer) not sure what my viable options are.  Concerned with going to the Low sensitivity and not detecting people but that may be what i need to try.

@brian2204bf I stacked two of the wedge mounts and it detected less cars but still did. I went back to Ring and haven’t had an issue since.

@brian2204bf Are you using the Outdoor Camera's magnetic mount? If so, you should be able to slightly adjust its position to angle it down a little bit. It could also help to refresh the camera's settings by resetting it. We list out the steps to reset the Outdoor Camera in this Help Center article.

i might try that with a piece of wood to see what happens.

I wanted to report back.  After making some changes to settings it seems to be working better now.  The main change was setting to all motion and back to people only.  Since then it is mostly working.  It does seem to always trigger if there is a large vehicle like Ambulance, trash truck, snow plow etc.  Normal sized cars and trucks do not seem to set it off any longer.  It does seem to have random times it triggers and i have seen some snow (flake or two not a steady snow) so not sure if that is it or not.

Yet another update. When it is sunny out and or snow on the ground the false positives are greater. This is during the day or night. As a caveat at night appears to be with large vehicles with flashing lights. Last couple of days has been overcast and warmer. The snow has melted. My issues have minimized and tolerable.

wondering if there is a correlation with colder weather and snow.

Yes, I have since I installed mine. I walk right out of my garage directly past the camera, and nothing at all recorded. This is why I bought this system. Please advise.

@lexusladyone Is this camera detecting any motion at all? Or does this only happen when you walk past it? As a first troubleshooting step, it can help to do a reset of the camera by firmly pressing and holding the pairing button on the back for 30 seconds. Once you release the button, you will be prompted to set it back up in the SimpliSafe mobile app.
