Doorbell Camera Won’t Turn On

I had to replace my doorbell chime that came with my house because it was making a loud hum.

At the time, my SimpliSafe doorbell was working perfectly. I unplugged the doorbell so it wouldn’t keep humming because it was not on its own breaker.
The doorbell stayed on for a little bit after the doorbell chime was disconnected from power and then turned off.

Had someone come out, replace the doorbell chime and transformer. Power is going back to the SimpliSafe Doorbell. 18 amps. But no light comes on when the doorbell is placed in the bracket. Nothing. I pushed the reset buttons and nothing.

Because the doorbell camera stayed on for a little bit after disconnected from power, does it have a battery in for small periods of no power, and does that need to get some juice until the lights are back on or is the doorbell camera dead?

The electrician touched the two wires going to the doorbell camera and the doorbell rings, so the issue is the camera.

Thoughts?

Update: when I plug it into an outlet via USB, the camera light comes on solid red and it won’t do anything else. Solid Red is not listed in the trouble shooting of the doorbell camera so what now?

Hi @TheRealLeoH,

Since the Video Doorbell was unplugged, it sounds to me that the doorbell's battery is dead and needs to charge up a bit. I would recommend leaving the Video Doorbell on its mount for 10 minutes so it can charge back up again.

After the 10 minutes are up, check the Video Doorbell to see if it is responsive. If it is not, the next step would be to check the setup of the mounting bracket. The Video Doorbell gets its charge from the mounting bracket, so if the gold pins on the Video Doorbell do not have proper contact with the mounting bracket it will not get adequate power. Make sure that the mounting bracket isn't screwed on too tight or that it's bending, as that can prevent solid contact on the gold pins.

I tried all that. The only time the light comes on is when I plug it in via USB and then it’s solid red.

i chatted with customer support and they are sending me a new doorbell camera.

Having same issue. 2 months later and their support still doesn't have a better response.

@NotMe if your Video Doorbell still works when plugged into USB, then it's likely that the issue is somewhere in the doorbell circuit. That's why we suggest checking the contacts on the mounting bracket. It might help to unscrew it from the wall, and re-screw it less tightly.

Also, something in the circuit might have shorted out, so it might be a good idea to check the bell box (or better, have an electrician do it).

Also, if you don't have one installed already, we have a Chime Connector, which is a small component that plugs into the circuit to ensure that the Video Doorbell gets the right amount of power. Our Support team can send that over at no cost.
