Camera Dark

Why is my camera so dark? It's not switching to night vision at night like it used to so at night its almost useless.

@kortneythern777 Which camera are you experiencing this with? Has anything changed with its placement or environment? For example, are there any new street or porch lights in its path that may be preventing it from launching night vision?

I would go into your camera settings and toggle night vision off and back on to see if that helps. It might also help to reset your camera by pressing and holding its pairing button for 30 seconds.

@rhermanson64 Which camera model are you experiencing this with? Are they all in the same area of your home, or are they scattered about? I would also be curious of what your Night Vision setting is currently set to - Off or Auto. When set to Auto, Night Vision will activate depending on the amount of light the camera detects. If your cameras still show black and white footage during the day, the environment might be a little too dark and it may help to change their placement, or add some light to the area.

I would also try toggling each camera's Night Vision setting in the SimpliSafe mobile app off and back on again. If that doesn't help, the next step would be to reset it. I'm unsure of your camera's model, so I'm linking you to the reset guide for each of our cameras below:

@rhermanson64 I had the same issue when trying to set up my SimpliSafe cameras after storing them for a year. The camera vision was very dark even during the daytime and in the evening there was absolutely no night vision just a blank black screen. It turned out that I had Lost the original power cord going to the camera and had replaced it with a dollar store cord. I moved the camera to another camera that had the original cord and it worked fine. After I replaced that dollar store cord with a quality cord, my camera works perfectly fine, night vision works perfect in pitch black . Very surprised that SimpliSafe could not ask you if you changed power cords.

@rhermanson64 it is because you’re not using the original SimpliSafe power cord, I made the mistake and tried setting them up with dollar store power cords, and the same thing daytime images were dark and night vision did not work when it was dark, just a pitch black screen. I switched power cords to a quality cord off of Amazon and that fixed my problem. My cameras are perfect now.

My outdoor camera in my backyard does not enter night vision either. It was working fine and all of sudden either won’t go to night vision or the spotlight turns on and off rapidly. Either way it’s pretty useless at night because you can’t see anything. I’ve done a hard reset by holding the button down on the camera and have also taken out the battery and placed it back in. Still not working unfortunately and have only had SS for 2 months

@mbattista113 Are there any lights in the camera's surrounding area that may mimc sunlight - like porch lights, street lights, or holiday lights? If there are, they could prevent the camera from entering Night Vision, so it can help to adjust the placement of the camera to avoid those lights.
