Android Do Not Disturb and App Notification Exceptions

I have the simplisafe app that notifies me with a message and sound when the cctv camera detect people. It works fine and notifies me normally but when my scheduled Do Not Disturb session starts it doesn't sound a notification (the message appears however). This is despite both the app being added in the 'Allowed During Do Not Disturb' settings AND in the 'Special Access-Do Not Disturb' settings. This happens accross all my devices (Samsung S21 running Android and Galaxy Tab S7+ Tablet running Android 13) and my wife's.

When I asked Simplisafe they questioned why I would want notifications if I have Do Not Disturb on.....!? Well maybe I dont want to be alerted with a trivial whatsapp post but I would like to be notified when there's someone in my back yard. They then went on to say its Android's or Samsung's fault despite other security apps like Tuya Smart behaving correctly under Do Not Disturb.

Anyone have this issue and /or resolved it?

Regards

Shaun

Hi @sgreynolds189 ,

It sounds like you're talking about a feature called Critical Alarm Notifications. You can read about how to enable it on our Help Center article here.

Thanks Davey

Only just seen this response. The article sets out what I had already done as mentioned in the original post. It doesn't resolve the issue. As I also mentioned this happens accross all my android devices and my wife's so it must be an app issue.

Regards

Hi @sgreynolds189,

Could you please try removing the SimpliSafe app from one of your devices and then download it again? In the past, that has worked for users experiencing notification issues. I would just like to try it on one of your devices first to see if that would be a fix in this case!

Thanks dlspsr

I attach a screenshots below showing the settings I have set showing the settings I have set

. I have tested this further and the issue seems to occur when my scheduled DND period comes on. If I manually set DND, the notifications come through. Any thoughts.

My Samsung XCover6 Pro was handling "Do Not Disturb" notification exceptions "Camera Flash" & "Flash Screen" just fine for months. Now I can't get it to do either. Someone could break my windows, open doors or windows, walk past my motion detectors up to my bed and stick me with a knife and my phone would just sit there, silent in the dark.

Doesn't do much to NOTIFY me!

Mean while, my wifes phone (apple) is jumping all over the countertop in the kitchen.

@mcwdixie Have you recently updated your phone or app lately? It could be possible that a recent update reset your Critical Alerts setting and they need to be turned back on.

I would check to ensure that Critical Alerts are still turned on by following the steps in this Help Center article

I've pretty much given up on this. (I'm the original poster).

My settings have been as described in the @davey_d instructions for over 6 months now and it still doesn't work over any of my devices. The only thing I can think of is that it has something to do with scheduled DND as opposed to just turning it on. My DND is scheduled for 10pm till 7am every night and I don't get any audible notifications from Simplisafe during that period.

We now leave my wife's phone off DND to be notified.

Hey ho......

You'd think this would just work, but it doesn't work here either. There's a bug somewhere.   I was wrong as it does work.  Hadn't done any troubleshooting on this since changing phones:  1) If you give Simplisafe App the DND permission, it will turn off DND when a critical push notification comes through and make a sound. 2) Turn off DND permission, when a critical push notification arrives it will make a sound but leave DND on.

I've chosen the latter.

@sgreynolds189 and @Z_B I've gone ahead and escalated your cases to our engineering team to take a look into. Someone will reach out to you both soon to get to the bottom of this, so keep an ear out for their call!

I have a Google Pixel 6 Pro running Android 14. I did everything listed in the document Davey linked above but also performed the actions below and it worked just fine.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Select Notifications
  3. Select Do Not Disturb
  4. Select Apps
  5. (If you don't have already have SimpliSafe listed as an added app then add it here)
  6. Select SimpliSafe from the list of "Apps that can interrupt"
  7. Choose which notifications you want to come through your DND

FYI, on my phone when I performed step 7 I was presented with the following screen:

Also, in case it matters (because I'm not going back to repeat this to test it, sorry) you may want to have DND turned on (as in, enabled for the phone so you see the DND icon at the top) when you go through these steps. If they don't work, turn it off and repeat.

If this works, please reply and let us know so SS can update their documentation. Thanks!

My gut tells me this is an Android issue, not a SimpliSafe issue.

I have a Samsung A23 5G Android 14 One UI 6.1 and I too can not get my simpli safe notifications to come past DND no matter what I do. All permissions granted, all items in reply posts attempted, nothing works.

I sleep during the day (night shifter) and while I'm sleeping I don't want things like phone calls, texts, email notifications walking me up, except those I have heated priority DND exception. I do however want the simpli safe outdoor camera watching my driveway and front door to alert me mainly so package deliveries don't sit there all day vulnerable to theft.

Not having this feature available is very troublesome and disappointing.

As a workaround, my wife gets the notices at work, then since her texts are allowed through DND she has to text me. That's a rather Rube Goldberg way to have a security app function.

Anything new on this issue since last posted about?

(I opened by putting the date at the top because it's also hard to track how old these posts are without dates on them.

Hello

OP here. Re the issue you are having, to be fair to Simplisafe they did call me a few times saying they were investigating and the DND exception for their notifications did start working. Not sure if it was their doing or a general update or both but seems to be working now for me.

@sgreynolds189 I'd forgot to mention that I use DND in manual mode, not scheduled where you had your issue. Even in manual mode it doesn't come through.

Just an afterthought.

@mjmcg In my search on this and similar matters with push notifications I found years of complaints here and there about various app notifications not coming thru.

My s23 Ultra has issues with 1 app only that I'm aware of and has nothing to do with DND.

When the phone is awake, they ping in repeatedly, when it falls asleep and screen off or locked for a while they come in delayed, when I open the screen with biometric fingerprint, they all flood in. So they are in there.

Samsungs only stay awake about 4 hours and requires new authentication. Mine delays long before that and I have extended unlock on when at home, so that seems not to matter.

My issue is similar to what I found at reddit, Samsung forum etc. in my search.

I'm going to submit a log to Samsung amd see what comes of it.

Did some extensive troubleshooting with Simplisafe on this issue some time back.  If I recall correctly, DND is not overridden for all events so things like [dis]arming do not trigger a sound.  Alarms will, some other things, but you can check if it's working by using Test mode on the keypad.  Can verify that it did turn off DND and there was an alert sound.  Galaxy A54 with up to date software.

I tried responding, but this forum deletes everything if you accidentally click back. SMH very frustrating forum software.

In addition to checking every setting everywhere, settings, apps, top 3 dots reset app preferences, may not work either. Restart if you do this and then change all those app setting back.

Reset Samsung android cache partition. Be careful, search directions.

Heres a thing to try also in Samsung.

Modes and routines.
