Sensor Adhesive Failure

It’s a little preposterous that this seems to be the best way to contact SimpliSafe about this, but while I was on vacation, the adhesive on one of my window sensors failed, triggering an alarm at 1am local time. I got notified by text in Europe 9 hours ahead, and had no choice but to have the police respond. Naturally, they determined it was a false alarm. I had no idea what had really happened until our cat sitter stopped in 12 hours later, which made for a rather nerve-wracking day on vacation.

I’ve had to replace SS sensor adhesives with 3M control strips several times previously, so this seems like a problem that ought to be addressed. My previous FrontPoint sensors adhered with some kind of super-sticky glue from Hell, and even though FP was otherwise terrible, the sensors certainly never came off.

Thanks for listening.

Hi @xiiidesign,

I'm very sorry to hear about this false alarm, and that your sensor has fallen off your window a few times. When placing the adhesive on your window, do you clean the area before? It is our recommendation that users clean the area with hydrogen peroxide and let it dry before using the adhesive, as it sticks better to clean areas.

This is a big concern for me too. Just put sensors over all my windows (21) and 2 have fallen off in the last week. Worried I will get a call when I am out of town...this is supposed to make me worry less, not more! Please don't come at me with the area prep admonition- I alcohol -swabbed and rubbed clean with lint free cloth.  And I count out 30 seconds pressing the frame on.  It is simple, the large part of the entry sensor does not have enough of the adhesive tape covering the back to secure the sensor on a window that opens and closes. There are several threads like this and the responses are the same. Please identify a better solution than chastising the customer, maybe the customer didn't screw up the installation.

@dlwootten I own a 40+ piece SS3 system, installed since 2017 and a SS2 system before that installed in 2012. One thing I have learned is clean surfaces AND quality 3M strips (of different types) are the only way to go. When I say "different types", the 3M velcro and picture hanger types are what I am specifically talking about. If you do a search in the community, I posted pictures of the actual products used, which you can easily pick up at any Home Depot, Lowes or Ace Hardware store.  I specifically use the plastic, thicker velcro type for motion and glass break sensors in the corner of rooms. Why? They are thicker and compensate for all of my crooked, uneven corners and once installed, "they ain't going anywhere" as the saying goes.  I also use longer strips (medium) for all of the motions and glass breaks and can easily cut to fit.

Once installed, I put my hand on the sensor and move it lightly to the right and left. If it moves, it comes back down and I redo it. Once done I am confident they will stay put. I do the same for entry sensors on windows.

Finally, I clean my six smoke sensors faithfully once every 60 days.  (SS says 30 but experience tells me that is enough). At the same time, I also hand check, as described above, all of my sensors. Total time for the bimonthly maintenance? Under 30 minutes, including breaks, phone calls, etc.

Hope this helps

@captain11 thank you for the additional info, it is what I plan to do.  My issue is that a redo, a lesson learned, shouldn't have been necessary.  If enough folks inform them that customers must perform remedial measures to ensure the sensors to stay put...maybe they should account for that shortfall in the next upgrade, either by including satisfactory mounting strips or by adding info in the installation instructions - heck, I can write it now : "Simplisafe DIY setup cannot account for all homeowner mounting scenarios. Attempt to mount the entry sensor in the desired location.  If, after mounting according to instructions the sensor moves at all with gentle lateral pressure, do not expect the mount to hold.  In that case, please use instead 3m (whatever) mounting tape, covering the entire wall-contact surface of the sensor.  If that still does not work, please contact Simplisafe Support for additional assistance." I'm just a bit chapped I mounted all these, and now I have to redo them all because I don't trust they will hold.

I had one out of about 25 fall off in 19 months. Same prep as @dlwootten

No one knows how long the sensors sit on the shelf. The command strips dry out with age, opened packs become less effective with age, storage etc.

Humidity and excessive heat can both prevent the adhesive from sticking to surfaces well.

I did the same after the one fell off a plastic door frame. I bought a roll of 3/8 wide 3M foam double stick with 3 times the weight advertised for command strips.

3M Extreme may last longer, cost more too.

Anyhow, most of that never got used on SS sensors, except that one, I never replaced any more, but have used it for 25 parallel mounted Zigbee sensors.

I also hung the remote siren and keypad  which are fairly heavy and they have stayed stuck as well with factory adhesive. So far. Maybe newer stock or something.

I don't have full monitoring anymore and so I'm not worried about it. False alarms just makes noise.

They're probably considered a temporary option vs screws. But I didn't want any holes. So here I sit, waiting for sensors to fall off.
