Pole barn 120' from the house

Long time listener ... first time caller!

I'm getting ready to buy my first SimpliSafe home security system and want to include my metal pole barn 120' from the house.  There is little or no wifi inside the pole barn and very little LTE.   Do you think the entry sensors and motion sensor will work?

@shurt1073 short answer: no. Steel building and a 120 ft distance from the sensor to the base is not a good combo for success. Note you can buy, try and return if not happy but truthfully I don't think it will work.

@captain11   Thank you for the response.  You don't know .....  what you don't know!  lol.  I'm so glad I asked this question before I ordered extra door / motion sensors.

@shurt1073 If you already ordered a system, do suggest you head over to Etsy and do a search on Simplisafe. One of the community members here modified an entry sensor with a long external antennae wire for longer range. I think it is about 22 bucks. I bought to use on my mailbox and, unfortunately, it was hit or miss even with that.  You may want to experiment that way.  The system is great, btw, in the house.

@captain11   Current security company who monitors my home alarm wants to add a completely new system for the barn.  $1,100 for installation and $26 per month to monitor.  That's a tough pill to swallow considering I can throw a rock from my house and hit my barn 120' away.  There has to be a better solution ..... buying a $180 separate SimpliSafe unit solely for the barn with no wifi or LTE?   IDK     I'll figure it out but my house security is going SimpliSafe by the end of the year.

@shurt1073   I agree, these SS sensors will probably not work inside the pole barn. Metal building is a faraday cage. But, as the Captain said there are hacked SS sensors for longer range and rubber covers to help make them more water resistant. No warranty on hacked sensors though. Your money.

You'd have to do the due diligence, but Yolink LoRa motion detection devices might hang outside on the eaves of the pole barn or the exterior walls. Supposedly up to a 1/4 mile "open" range.

They're advertised as long driveway motion sensors etc. Amazon. Some IFTTT, home assistant, Alexa etc. if so, automations could be setup for Alexa alerts perhaps, home assistant for sure, plus their app alerts.

Yolink also has a long distance siren. Do the due diligence. May or may not work with the driveway type sensors.🤷 I don't have any. Untested. Read the reviews, ask questions on Amazon etc.

Separate hub and app though for Yolink. I don't have any so can't vouch for them. Supposedly no fees or subscriptions etc. You decide. Self monitoring.

Some security ideas;

Keep your shed out of sight if possible...

Hide what's inside your shed...no easy see thru, window shades etc.

Use a shed security bar...

Fit shed security hinges...

Strong locks...

Window break security bars or security film for the glass, if any...

Add a security light...solar motion lights are cheap - disposable if sun is available...

Fit a security camera... doesn't sound feasible currently...

Anchor your expensive belongings. Looped chains & locks etc.

@dlpsr   Whoa ... all that is good stuff!   The pole barn is 24x32 with a 10' overhead door, one service door and two small windows.  I like your crime prevention ideas and its made me re-think all of my options for the barn.

My phone call to SimpliSafe customer service today confused me because she told me the barn would be "no issue" at 120', along with my new home system, but down deep I knew it would be iffy from reading multiple posts.

Thanks for the reply ..... I've got a few weeks to figure it out.

@shurt1073 Well, they're employees, 😂, sales and customer service is one and the same these days isn't it..some of the support is also "over there" somewhere and a bit lacking in training.

Theoretically, the SS sensors in open air used to be advertised as up to 800 feet... I'm old and forgetful so don't quote me.

But in a steel building that RF is not going to penetrate. Wifi wouldn't either. Plus the base will be in your house, behind walls also.

But, the sensors aren't that expensive to try it. And outside extras are available at Etsy.

The SS "sensors" do work ok.

Correction, Cameras are mediocre on solar, then My second biggest gripe is its an entirely closed system. So I built my own on top of home assistant. Redundancy is a good thing
