Supervisor Alarm Function Expanded: Supervisory “Door-Left-Open” Monitoring for Entry Sensors

Feature Request: Supervisory “Door-Left-Open” Monitoring for Entry Sensors (e.g., Freezer, Overhead Garage Door, with Escalating Alerts)

Post body:

Hi SimpliSafe Team and community,

I’ve been using SimpliSafe for years in my home, and it’s been rock-solid for security and peace of mind. Thank you for the ongoing improvements — features like sensor supervision and customizable notifications already make the system stand out.

I’d like to suggest an enhancement to expand supervisory-style monitoring (similar to how the Water leak Sensor works today) to any Entry Sensor. This would allow users to detect if a door is accidentally left open for an extended period, without always triggering a full intrusion alarm.

Proposed Feature: Configurable “Open Duration Supervisory Alert” for Entry Sensors

•  In the app (or via keypad settings), allow users to enable Supervisory Open Monitoring on individual Entry Sensors (e.g., one mounted on a chest freezer door, upright freezer in the garage, garage overhead door, utility room door, etc.).

•  User-configurable options:

•  Open duration threshold — e.g., alert if open longer than 5, 10, 15, or 30 minutes (customizable per sensor).

•  Alert behavior tiers (escalating response):

1.  Initial local annunciation — Base Station and/or Keypad chimes/plays a custom announcement (silent option available, or mute after first notice).

2.  If unresolved after a short grace period (e.g., 5–15 minutes user-set), escalate to:

•  Push notification to the app (with sensor name, e.g., “Freezer Door Left Open – Check Now”).

•  Optional notification to the central monitoring station (for professional follow-up).

3.  If still not resolved, the monitoring center contacts the account holder (similar to how supervisory alerts like low battery or tamper work today).

•  Additional nice-to-have: Option for daily scheduled check (e.g., every evening at 10 PM) — system verifies the sensor is closed; if not, trigger the full escalation sequence.

Real-world use cases (why this would be valuable):

•  Freezer/chest freezer in garage or basement — Kids or family accidentally leave it ajar; early local chime reminds them, escalation prevents food spoilage/thawing (costly loss).

•  Overhead garage door — Left open overnight; gentle reminder chime first, then app alert/monitoring call to avoid security risks or energy waste (heating/cooling).

•  Other non-intrusion doors — Workshop, shed, or pet door — monitor for accidental opens without false alarms.

This builds directly on existing Entry Sensor hardware and the supervisory logic already in place for Water Sensors — no new devices needed, just app/firmware enhancements. Many users (including several in existing threads about door-open warnings) have similar needs for non-security “reminder” monitoring.

I’m happy to clarify details or discuss how this could integrate with current system. Thanks again for listening to customer ideas — this would make SimpliSafe even more versatile for everyday home management
