Why does my outdoor camera spotlight have a delay?

Why does my spotlight on my outside camera delay going on all go a sudden. There is at least a 10 second delay after the camera starts recording

Hi @pamiller89, 

Has anything changed with the placement of your camera or the Base Station? Once the Outdoor Camera detects motion at night and begins to record, the Spotlight should turn on as well. 

It may help to toggle the Spotlight setting off/on in your SimpliSafe mobile app, as well as reset the camera using the steps listed out in this Help Center article. If those two steps do not help, I would then recommend moving the Base Station a little closer to your camera.

I have done all these steps two times. And still the spotlight is delayed. What else can I do?

I have the same problem.  The camera detects something and it starts recording but the spotlight does not come on until halfway through the recording.  By that time whatever set off the camera has departed the area.

Since resetting the Outdoor Camera didn't help to turn its Spotlight on in time, this is something that our engineers would want to look into a little bit deeper. I've forwarded both of your case details to them; some will reach out to you soon to investigate further.

Okay thank you Emily but waiting too long is not getting the correct use out of these cameras and the service I am paying for.  I would like a replacement in the meantime while they investigate and I would be happy to forward you the videos.

I am having this same problem with one of my two outdoor cameras. There is a 9 sec delay before the spotlight comes on after a motion event. It records at first motion, just no light until 9 secs..  Any updates on this problem? I do have a call in to tech support to try a few things, but it looks like this may be a camera problem after seeing this post.. Thought?

Update as of 12/12/2023. Tech support sent a replacement camera and the new one works as it should. Great customer support. Thanks.

I have this same issue with two cameras. The nighttime use of the camera is no good as long as this is happening. Whatever set off the camera will likely be gone by the time the spotlight comes on.

Please give an update as to what’s happening with this and when we can expect a resolution.

Update.. I spent a lot of time with tech support. Ended up moving the camera to several different locations and the problem followed. After lots of troubleshooting, simplisafe agreed to replace the camera. I'm waiting on the new camera now.

After getting replacement cameras, one of those new cameras (was replaced around last Christmas) is already doing the same. When it is activated, it’ll record for about 10 seconds then the spotlight will turn on.

@ssj003​ Did you notice this delay in the replacement camera's spotlight right when you installed it? Or did this just recently begin to happen? I'll forward this information to our engineers.

All my outdoor cameras are on solar or the power cord and have no problems but my one that is running on nothing but battery does this exact same thing at night, camera will come on but it will take about 10 seconds for the light come on. Reset does not help and it has perfect signal and base station is the closet to that camera.

@Runkeldc​ more than likely they will send you another one as I just had the same thing and they sent another one and it's working. I believe it has something to do with updates and the updates fix one thing but are causing another, I'm not sure but seems to be what is happening.

I just had the same thing happen with my five SimpliSafe outdoor cameras This week. Motion will trigger the camera, but the infrared or spotlight have a 9 to 10 second delay before they come on. I’m guessing it’s either an update issue, or a base station issue, Because they all failed Within a day.

We have this same issue and spent over an hour on the phone with simpli safe going through all the steps: deleting the cameras adding them back….. They determined they needed to be replaced.  Just received 4 new cameras, put them up last night and they went off in the middle of the night recording for 8 seconds before the spotlight comes on, so of course what ever set it off is gone before you can see anything! So unless ALL your cameras are screwed up there is another issue.  We are very disappointed in simpli safe.  This isn’t the first problem with the cameras and we have only had the service for 1 1/2 years. Not to mention the faulty smoke detector which triggered a fire dept response when we were away and the lack of notification sound choice.  We have had sooo many issues!

I reset my base station (pulled batteries, unplugged) and the cameras began working better. The light or IR light issue went away, as did the “ghost” tripping where all five cameras would trip simultaneously and record. I now can’t livestream after dark on all cameras or during daytime on three cameras. I’ll be factory resetting the cameras today.

@infob19e82​ Do you see any error message when you try to view a livestream of your cameras or is it just a blank screen? Also, do you run into this issue when using the web app as well?

If resetting your cameras does not help please let me know and we can continue to troubleshoot.

@emily_s​ didn't work. Still a 9 second lag for the infrared to kick in once the camera wakes up. Which sucks beacuse we had a break-in nearby and he walked thru my yard twice because my neighbors Arlo cameras caught him going thru his yard and into mine. Both times he was out of range from my camera before night vision kicked in, so my video was of no use to police. And my camera would actually have been a better quality video if it was working properly.

@Gator​ It sounds like you're experiencing a similar issue as others in this thread, so I moved your comments here. Our engineers are looking into why there is this delay for Night Vision/the Outdoor Camera's spotlight, and I've added your case to their ongoing ticket. 

And if you haven't already, I would also recommend toggling the Night Vision setting off, saving that change, and then turn it back on again.

My outdoor camera takes 9 seconds to switch on the night mode vision. When I watch a video the camera is on because I can hear the outside noise, but a full 9 seconds pass before it clicks into night vision where I can actually SEE anything on the video. Even when I have it in spotlight mode for nighttime.

Mine is 6 months old and started doing this about a month ago. SS needs to fix this fast. We had a break-in next door and the suspect went through my yard twice. Video was useless to the police because dude was gone before the IR kicked in. My yard is very dark at night.

@allen2158​ today I took my camera battery out for about a minute. Put it back in. I then went into my settings and removed my camera from the system. I held the reset button until the camera made a sound. Went back into the app to add a device. Followed all the instructions to put the camera back into the system. Tonight I checked my camera and it worked perfectly again. IR and spotlight both came on immediately. 

So basically, remove the camera from the system. Do a hard reset/reboot. Add the camera back into the system as a new device.

weeks.  Like I said, mine worked great for a month and then one and then the other started doing this.  It’s as if they updated it with a bug in the code.  Will yours update in a week or two and set you back to square one?  I hope not…

Experiencing the EXACT same thing. This is disappointing because someone looked through our package deliveries the other day and the spotlight came on way too late to illuminate their face on camera. This needs to be fixed ASAP.

I had the same problem started in November about three months ago. In fact, I’m the first one who started this conversation. SimpliSafe replaced my camera I sent back the old one.  The new one was fine until last night it started doing the same thing. No spotlight for 10 seconds. SimpliSafe can’t even fix it with a new camera.  Might be time to find a new service because I’m not getting what I’m paying for.

@pamiller89​ try removing the camera from the the system, do a hard reset of the camera, add the camera back in as "new" device. That's what worked for me.

Emily, this has been going on since last November when I first stated this problem how is it that these engineers have not figured this out yet? My daughter just called me who has the same service and theirs has been fine for a year and tonight it started with her camera with a nine second delay.

I think it may be time to downgrade the service since we’re paying for the service and it’s not working correctly

Just to let everyone know I have an email from a higher up guy at simplisafe and he said it is designed to do that now with the new pre roll that is on the cameras, it will always have a pre roll and be recording then the camera will activate and then the light will come on. Yes I don't like it either as at night the pre roll is great but by the time something happens its done and over with by the time the light comes on. Just wanted to let everyone know what I found out from one of the big guys at simplisafe.
