Account/App cannot access outside US or UK

I just learned that one cannot access the SS app outside US or UK. They told me its to protect my privacy that app do not work outside the country. The purpose of security system is to keep our home safe when not home or travelling outside the country. What does that has to do with my privacy? Instead its more troubling that I cannot see if my home is secured or not. I understand SS cannot provide full service outside US or UK, but at-least they needs to allow the account/app access to watch the system to make sure our home is secured if travelling outside the country. Its a shame that this is not an obvious feature being a security company. I strongly suggest SS team to do something about it.

Does anyone know if we can access the app using VPN if travelling outside US?

@vivekgandhi27 I could have bet money I used the app successfully in Germany on a river cruise last year. No VPN, just using the local cell network.

Did you actually try?  I just used VPN on my desktop, connected to a server in Berlin and was able to log into my dashboard on my desktop without any issues, with full functionality.  I also used the sales AI bot and got the following:

Just spoke to support on chat and confirmed US and UK only, which does not make any sense and conflicts with the AI bot on the sales page.

And, on Google Play, the SimpliSafe android app clearly states "Control of your SimpliSafe wireless system from anywhere in the world!"

So...recap:

SimpliSafe AI bot on website says you can use the phone app anywhere in the world.

The Google Play store says you can use the Android version of the phone app anywhere in the world, and

SimpliSafe support agent says sorry, but US for US systems only and UK for UK systems only.

Anyone else confused?

SimpliSafe, I stand by my memory that I used the Android app successfully several times while abroad on vacation.  SS, what is the official status on this?

@captain11​ I did not try yet since I am still in US but I have a travel coming in few months. I was checking what all functions are available outside US since SS is only available in US and UK, and that is when I came across a Reddit post that we cannot access app outside US even though the system is registered in US. So I asked the support chat and got the same response as you.

@vivekgandhi27​  I did a  bit more digging/investigation.  I believe SS has a bit of a messaging problem, and from a technical standpoint, I understand why, but they need to get all communication channels on the same page.

A bit of explanation. I have a trusted neighbor of 30+ years as my 1st contact on our account when I go abroad, with me 2nd.  I use Verizion Travel pass, so I keep my same number and get unlimited data and text. I have used the SS app in France, Germany, UK Switzerland and throughout the Caribbean with no issues. (Confirmed with the Mrs, don't know what I would do without her!) In my instance, not an issue.  I expect that monitoring will not be able to reach me (although they should) but others may be on different roaming plans etc and may not be able to get through.

So, in the real world, the answer is a "definite it depends". For me, works like a clock. For others, due to local networks, carrier, SIM etc, maybe not. Again, in my specific case, I have not experienced any issues. I hope the same for you.

But SS, your AI bot, Google Play Store and tech agents should all be saying the same thing.  You have work to do on your messaging and training.

@captain11​ That was my first thought too that as long as I have a working US contact number associated with the system, it should not matter if I am in US or not, everything should works smoothly. I guess we will know what's working when my travel comes up unless SS team makes the app access available from anywhere before my travel :D

@vivekgandhi27​ It has been available everywhere as long as you have the necessary foundation on  your phone and local network requirements match. I have used it in Europe without issues for years, and left our Portugal to my list. Heck, there are times in the US where there are connection issues and not caused by SS; sometimes server issues on their part but very rare. I would expect you will not have any issues. BTW, besides being a loyal and happy SS customer, a dedicated Pixel user, currently using the Pixel 10.  (before that pixel 4a, 6a, and 8.

Hey @vivekgandhi27 just wanted to provide some more information while we work on updating our customer facing documentation. 

SimpliSafe is officially supported in the U.S. and U.K. While some customers can access the app or web app when traveling internationally, availability outside these countries is not guaranteed and may be affected by security and network restrictions. 

To @captain11's point the "security" and network restrictions can be anything from local government restrictions to temporary pauses due to bad actors in an area.
