Access to sensor diagnostics (battery, signal strength, etc.)

So it seems that SS Specialist have access to tools not on the dashboard - for example signal strength on sensors, possibly battery level.

This would be helpful at times for customers especially since apparently (according to one specialist) signal strength is directly tied to battery level.

Anyway to add something like this to the dashboard or as an extra menu item so it doesn't "poll" sensors every time yo access dashboard.

Thanks for the suggestion. It may by a bit counter to our "Simple" ethos, but I'll pass it on to our devs.

I am having trouble understanding how adding sensor battery levels to the app makes it more complicated.

I have 45 sensors and a camera on my system, not to mention two keypads.  They use different types of batteries depending on the device.

Am I supposed to just replace every battery in the system every time one sensor seems to fail to respond?  That is not "simple."  It is "simple minded!"

@krstrick  Your suggestion for battery strength is excellent. While available on the outdoor cameras, this indeed would be a great add for all sensors. As far as signal strength, and more, if you look at your phone app you will note the Connection Check Tool.  It is excellent for an indepth analysis of your sensors' connection and nicely done.

For SS, adding the connection check tool to the website dashboard and giving us battery strength view will be great for customers and your support agents. (And yes, if you were wondering, please respond you read this thread and will pass along to the crack and elite SS development team! HO HO HO

Be nice if was an update to show all the sensors battery strength in the app.

Note: This comment was created from a merged conversation originally titled Battery strength

@fastbagger Your feature request sounded similar to this thread, so I've merged it here. We have submitted this to our dev team for their consideration. Once we hear more from them we'll provide an update in this thread.

@fastbagger This!!!! Including the battery percentage for the cameras is great but having them for the sensors would be great too. In the past couple of months we got random alerts two sensors had low batteries which we could've replaced together had we known

I'm having a similar issue with one of three sirens sounding upon entry ( delayed door sensor). Normally it quietly chimes from the station but now the sirens are sounding (not a full fledged alarm). Research indicates a siren may need new batteries but which one?

Would be nice if app could tell me the exact unit that needs the batteries replaced.

@advantagediagnostics The SimpliSafe mobile app should tell you when one of your devices has a low battery. On the home page of the mobile app, click on "learn more" underneath where it usually says "Everything is OK." From there, click the 🔄 refresh icon on the top left corner, and it will tell you if any of your devices have a low battery.

First off, I must commend the thought and engineering which went into the product. Setup was pretty straightforward and your tech support is patient and knowledgeable. Now the suggestion:

I agree with the sensor battery status for the app for all the reasons mentioned above. I would also like to see the signal strength. My contact today could have taken much less of your rep's time if I had access to the signal strength of each sensor. Most of the time was spent testing locations to get a stronger signal strength on one sensor. The fix required a new location for the base station.

Again, so far a great group of products. I intend to add additional sensors and confirming there is sufficient signal will require a call to your tech support. After all, time is money.

Thanks!

I also think the product is great.  But the last post on this thread was 7 months ago.  Has any progress been made toward being able to view device battery level and perhaps signal strength in the app?

@charles4866 At this time we do not have any news regarding this feature request. When we learn more from our devs, we will be sure to update this thread.

I've been able to convert Simplisafe battery "normal" to percentages, however, whether it works or not is still to be determined. None have depleted yet to know.

If the battery integration in Home Assistant works, they "should" send me a message at 30 percent as the battery levels fall. Hopefully a lot sooner than SS which seems to be after the battery is already dead. Once lithiums start depleting, it's usually fairly rapid to failure.

The red one is a Ring V2 keypad I'm tinkering with for my other DIY alarm system in Home Assistant and not completely setup yet in the battery integration.

I would like to add my request for battery percentage readings within the app. Nothing is worse than getting a battery low warning when you are out of town and can do nothing about it.

Same view here, my system has been running about a year now. I can see when the cameras will need charging in the app but there’s no indication if all the door and motion sensors are almost dead or half used. I’d rather not get drip fed 15 random alerts of device not responding over the course of a few weeks

IT’S CRAZY that battery levels of all devices are not more available and also much more specific, meaning shown as a percentage! Please add this feature to the app asap AND please also show the current battery level as a percentage on the Home Screen of the keypad as well! I  have had a couple occasions where I came in the house late night when the rest of my family was sleeping, went to punch in the code to my keypad only to find that the battery was dead! Then had to scramble like crazy to pull out my phone, open the app and enter the passcode there before the alarm started blaring and scaring the hell out of everyone in the middle of the night! This info should be much more top level and intuitive. Please fix this ASAP, it’s really important for every day use And is a significant hole in an otherwise robust system.

Heres what data I'm able to get in my home brewed system.

Whether the SS batteries are able to report I haven't determined yet, one has to go low.

3 Messages

@dlpsr Is this a Home Assistant integration, or something else?

1.6K Messages

@chrisbakos Yes, Home Assistant and battery notes integration, some templates to convert Simplisafes "normal" to percentage.

Still, unknown what happens when battery normal goes low they always report 100%.

Battery Notes knew the battery type and number, so I'm still hopeful.

Where my Aqara entry sensors report actual percentage level, 62, 88 etc.

I changed the threshold to 95 being low to test SS entry sensors and others.

But I'm not there yet. 😂  I hired Gpt4 to help me, free help. Lol🤔

It may not be possible with SS being a closed system, but if it is I'll find a way. 😅

@chrisbakos

Here's what I think I've determined.

❌ SimpliSafe doesn’t expose real battery levels.

✅ You can create virtual sensors using their "normal"/"low" states.

✅ Aqara and other Zigbee devices provide real % because they’re open.

🤷 SimpliSafe likely won’t change this — it’s part of their walled garden model.

So I haven't quit, but am close. 😂

@dlpsr I'm having trouble right now with all my SimpliSafe batteries showing LOW, even though they are all new (Homepage integration). I must have the wrong field - is it either "normal" or "low"?

The percentage conversion is awesome, if possible. I'm not very good at this, so any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!!

@amgray19 You can check with an Ai if you use one, you'll need some templates to make the conversion.

The SS batteries display is typically "normal".

I converted to % but it was always 100%.

I don't think SS even allows access to actual battery data. I've never gotten it to work properly so far.

I used Home Assistant and the Battery Notes integration.

So Finally, gave up and deleted the SS batteries from Battery Notes.

All of my Aqara entery sensors etc. have eveything exposed that's needed anyhow.

When Simplisafe fails or as it fails, I'll be tossing the parts in a storage box. Including their scrap cameras.

So, I guess I'll keep the HAOS Simplisafe integration for geofence arming and disarming & toast the battery trials as a fail.

I get the door sensor is not responding voice message fairly frequently and I had assumed this would be the same for motion sensors. I discovered a couple of days ago my motion sensors were not talking to the base station/keypad. I tried the test mode and nothing happened when pressing the button. I removed the batteries, waiting 30s and put them back in and they started working.

I've not had any warnings that they are not responding, the system just lets them go inactive and not realise. I've no idea how long they have been effectively turned off for.

If they updated the system to show signal strength and battery level then the system should also see that the motion sensors are not updating and there might be an issue

I would like this to be implemented too.

I currently have 43 sensors of different types. If l go away for a week or two, l don’t want to have to change all the batteries  on the chance that a sensor battery nearing depletion might go flat and stop working while l’m gone.

This really would be a useful feature.
