Nest Thermostat Integration

SimpliSafe claims "If you own a Nest thermostat, it will automatically adjust the temperature depending on the state of your system. For example, when you disarm your system, this tells your Nest thermostat that you are home and it will either turn the temperature up for when it's seasonally cold or turn the temperature down for when it's seasonally warm.  Using Google Assistant, you are able to sync your Nest thermostat via the SimpliSafe web app or smartphone app."

Has anyone done this successfully with the new SimpliSafe? I see no integration with the thermostat, only the Google assistant.

With Interactive Monitoring active, SimpliSafe is able to integrate with smart home platforms like Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa. For more info on how to set up, visit the Help Center article here. Integration has previously included Nest Thermostats, through the Works with Nest platform. Unfortunately, due to the changeover to Works with Google (after Google acquired Nest), this integration is no longer available.

TL;DR: Google's Work with Nest was retired in 2019 when its functionality was rolled into Google Assistant. At that time new connections to the service were halted but old connections remained working. I'm guessing it's at that time that the functionality stopped working for new connections.

The much longer version for those who care is below.

It looks like it stopped working sometime in 2019 per https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/9/18537331/google-nest-cancellation-assistant-smart-home-integration-report which has the following information:

Similarly, SimpliSafe customers will lose the ability to directly control a Nest thermostat based on SimpliSafe’s alarm status or see their current home temperature from within the SimpliSafe app. “For example, people might have their thermostat turn down every time they set their alarm to “Away” so as not to heat an empty house in the winter,” says SimpliSafe CEO Chad Laurans. Now, they’ll need a workaround using Google Assistant to schedule both the thermostat and the alarm system. “Instead of SimpliSafe interacting with Nest, it’s both SimpliSafe and Nest interacting with Assistant,” he says.

What will happen to my Works with Nest connections if I migrate my Nest Account to Google?

If you are the owner of a Nest home (you can see your account status in your Nest app settings under Settings > Family), you must remove all your Works with Nest connections before you can migrate to a Google Account. Those connections will not be supported when you use a Google Account. When you migrate, we’ll give you an opportunity to review your Works with Nest connections and decide how you wish to proceed.
Important: If you decide to migrate to a Google Account, it will remove your Works with Nest connections and they will no longer work. This action is not reversible.

What happens to my existing Works with Nest connections if I don't migrate my Nest Account to Google? When will my connections stop working?

Your existing devices and integrations will continue working with your Nest Account, however you won’t have access to new features that will be available with a Google Account. If we make changes to the existing WWN connections available to you with your Nest Account, we will make sure to keep you informed.
We’ll stop accepting new WWN connections on August 31, 2019. Once your WWN functionality is available on the Works with Google Assistant platform you can migrate with minimal disruption from a Nest Account to a Google Account.
For WWN integrations that cannot be migrated, you will have the option to maintain those integrations with your Nest Account, however, you won’t have access to new features that will be available with a Google Account.

I just got off the phone with customer service who had never heard of the integration. We learned that you have to use Google Assistant as a proxy to connect the Simplisafe to your Nest, not the other way around. You have to give Google Assistant your Simplisafe username and password. It also only works with the new base station. I'm really annoyed that the integration is misleadingly advertised on both counts. Shame on Simplisafe.

It used to work with old system also, until Google bought Nest and start switching servers, it's not SimpliSafe fault

Also, it doesn't work the way it use to. We moved right when they made this switch and left our old Nest at the old house. When we "added" then new one to our account we could no longer use those features.  

Even at that, it didn't turn on/off the way it did previously (due to security per Google).  We also didn't want to get yet another spyware device in our house.

It was pretty annoying then.

Now, more so since we have been gradually de-googling our life since they pushed up the "update" to our phones at the beginning of the pandemic which started draining our batteries faster even though the tracking was "opt-in."

The auto on/off feature of he thermostat is the main reason we spent the extra money on it.  Otherwise, it is essentially just a slightly easier to program $200 device than a standard $40 thermostat which you only have to really do 1x for the most part.

Now that our schedules are all messed up working from home, it just ends up staying on all the time even when we are not home.  Again, they have that app for the phone, but more spyware and battery drain.

This is all on GOOGLE.  BTW, those features "do" work on their home security choice from what I under stand, but somehow the exact same process with this one is a security problem.  Not buying it.

Works great here.

I have a SS3 (the new one) system at a rental house.
When the system is armed away, the Nest goes to Eco mode.
The moment the system is disarmed, the Nest goes back to the regularly scheduled program.

Google Assistant is not involved, I never used that, never set that up, never had to do anything.

This saves a lot of energy, renters never remember to set a thermostat back, and the schedules are not predictable or learnable.

Maybe this would break if the Nest ever needs replacement?
Could someone hack up a DIY version of this with "If This Then That"?

Google's Nest thermostat does NOT fully integrate into SimpliSafe the way all other components do. Despite the compatibility claims, you have two separate remote controls - one for SimpliSafe and one for Nest. I only discovered this shortcoming after purchasing two very expensive Nest thermostats for my two homes, and just returned them. I like my SimpliSafe systems, and was not willing to open a Gmail account for my thermostats to work remotely. If you're leery of Google having access to all your data, as I am, you'll need to use another wifi thermostat.  Recommendations please?

@john​ thanks for the feedback. The way that Nest Integration works is that with your permission, SimpliSafe would share data with your smart thermostat - specifically logged events for when you're home or away. That's what the thermostat can use to automatically adjust your home's temperature.

But no, our system isn't able to add the thermostat as an actual component and control it like one of our own products.

 I like my SimpliSafe systems, and was not willing to open a Gmail account for my thermostats to work remotely. If you're leery of Google having access to all your data, as I am, you'll need to use another wifi thermostat.

What? Are you suggesting that if you open a Gmail account and only use it for your thermostat set up and use that Google will still "have access to all your data"? That's obviously not true.  At most it's going to have access to what your thermostat is doing and some related data but that's not going to be much data and the likelihood that data can be exploited or used against you in a meaningful way versus say, using a Gmail account for everything is extremely, minimally, almost immeasurably low.

What's the current update on this SimpliSafe/Nest Integration for setting the temperature back?

I have an older system with a Nest account, not migrated to Google.
It's been working great for years -- when I set the alarm to "away" the thermostat goes to away.
The moment SimpliSafe goes OFF, the heat comes on.


But now I need to switch accounts.
Is it possible to restore this functionality?

@brycen​ Unfortunately no. The Works for Google platform works very differently, so we weren't able to keep the same functionality. Currently I have no further info about further development, but when we do I'll let you know.
