Sensors use Wi-Fi?

If sensors are out of range of the base station will the sensors communicate with the base station over my Wi-Fi?

No. They're RF. (Radio frequency)

Yeah, that's what I thought too. But the Simplisafe reps are trying to tell me I just need to get a "free" Wi-Fi range extender from my internet provider so my keypad and sensors in my metal shop building 200' away from the base station in my house will work. Starlink just loves handing out free equipment! Maybe Simplisafe should send me a free RF signal extender...

Simplisafe sales person Dan: "Yes, Simplisafe will work in your shop also." Me: "Dan, it's 200' from my house. It's a metal building." Dan: "It's no problem." Well, it's a problem! Going to be returning the equipment tomorrow.

@irspiff we apologize, but it appears that you were given incorrect information. As mentioned by dlpsr, the Base Station and SimpliSafe sensors communicate through Radio Frequency, not WiFi. So a WiFi extender would not help in this situation.

The Base Station should be able to communicate to devices ~200 feet away, but your shop being made of metal can cause interference, making the communication a little harder. We recommend moving the Base Station to the side of your home that is closest to your shop to minimize the distance between the two.

Maybe 200 feet in open air, but not thru walls, not my walls anyhow. Weak outdoors to 5 outdoor cameras as you all know already.

Less than 100 feet indoors until sensors drop in my testing and as mentioned, metal buildings create a faraday cage and block most all signals.

His situation requires some thinking for a working solution external to the metal

building.

Faraday cage for sure. I asked the sales rep several times about this working so far away in a metal shop building and they assured me each time it would not be an issue. Then when I called in to talk to support, they tried to convince me the sensors will work over Wi-Fi. Not impressed with what Simplisafe has going on here with their sales and support lack of product knowledge. The main reason I got the system was to protect the shop building.

It's a shame really that most people like me, captain11 and dlpsr and many others on this forum know more than the reps at simplisafe. I guess that's why we have forums and I do love simplisafe but some more hard core training is needed.
